#Track2Track: Laser Quest
"It's better to ask for FOREGIVENESS, not PERMISSION." This was the approach Tulsa artist Dial Tone and videographer VideoHero took when shooting their music video "Laser Quest" at the AHHA Tulsa. The art gallery located in the heart of downtown Tulsa had recently opened an exhibit called "The Experience" which is just as the title says "an experience" and a must see. But unbeknownst to Dial Tone, VideoHero, and AHHA Tulsa this would also be the perfect location for "Laser Quest."
Here's Dial Tone's explanation of the song Laser Quest:
Laser Quest is the 4th track on Dial Tone's critically acclaimed album "Tones Beach" which was released earlier this year. What immediately stands out about this track is the unique sounds and production. Up-and-coming producer Cruise VanGoe lived up to his reputation as a prodigy as Laser Quest was only 1 of the first 3 beats he had ever made (and his other beat which Dial Tone used on Mr. Robot is just as fire!). The production on Laser Quest gives you an island indigenous feel as drums bongos are combined with electronic synthesizers and a hard hitting 808 drum. These are the sounds of Tones Beach.
This is for the natives,
In Africa didn't come save us,
Black Wallstreet raised us,
OGs paved this
Bars like the ones above showcase Dial Tone's versatility as he is able to cover a range of topics in just a small amount of time. The way Dial Tone spits makes you appreciate his clever ability to put words together, but if you really listen to the lines you realize that his real talent is his ability to story tell. It's when you start putting these lines together that you realize that not only does he rap but there beyond the words is a real story. But just not any story his. And it's his tone and delivery that help more vividly paint the picture of both the harsh realities and the beauties that come from being from his side of town. His depictions of violence are counteracted with the his belief in family, friends, and his optimism of the future. His experiences has helped him to gain a knowledge that he uses to make his moves. And as he says: "We don't move off emo, we move off logic".
As stated before Laser Quest is an experience. Both the song and the video. The song has is the perfect combination of production, bars, and flow that keeps the listener continuously engaged as different sounds echo off the ear drum. The video is just as sensory driven as the use of light and shadow create an eye opening experience where one blink can mean you miss everything!
