7 Erfahrungen, die ein guter Bandleader gesammelt haben muss

Vor bereits 10 Jahren habe ich meine ersten Banderfahrungen gesammelt und hatte die naive Vorstellung, dass es ausreiche eben der beste Musiker zu sein, um seine Band gut zu führen. - Ich habe mich ja so geirrt!

Die Band, der ich mich angeschlossen habe, hat sich aufgelöst, kurz nachdem Ich aus einem Streit heraus, aus der Band geworfen wurde, also habe ich meine eigene Band gegründet und beschlossen alles besser zu machen und es lief auch alles besser, bis ich ein neues Problem bekommen, das ich aus der ersten Band nicht kannte und dann... musste ich meine eigene Band zu Grabe tragen.

Aus meiner Erfahrung dürfen andere Musiker profitieren, also stelle ich vor: die 7 wichtigsten Erfahrungen, die man gemacht haben muss, um eine Band gut zu führen.

1 Instrumente und Fertigkeiten der anderen Musiker kennenlernen

Das mag erstmal banal klingen, aber oftmals sind Musiker auf sich selbst fixiert. Der Grund, warum ich in einem Leihenchor singe und neben meinem Keyboard auch Bass und Bratsche spiele, ist um besser für derartige Instrumente schreiben zu können. - In meiner ersten Band war eben das ein Streitthema! Der Gitarrist war der Bandleader und war aufgrund vieler anderen Probleme so demotiviert bei den Proben, dass er sich nicht länger die Mühe gemacht hat, die Musik für das Keyboard zu notieren. Pianisten können nicht unbedingt anhand des Gitarrenspiels oder durch ein gutes Gehör etwas passendes spielen und so kam es eben zum Streit, der für mich das Ende in dieser Band hieß. - Aus dieser Erfahrung heraus, habe ich beschlossen, alle Instrumente, für die ich schreibe ein bisschen spielen zu können.

Andererseits muss nicht nur das Instrument verstanden werden, sondern auch der Skill, des Musikanten. Ich habe erlebt, wie Komponisten bei ihrer Musik wollten, dass alles um eine Terz höher gespielt werden soll und während das für die Gitarre kein Problem ist, stößt die Sängerin mit ihrer Stimme vielleicht auch auf Grenzen.

2 Formuliere die Agenda

Ich war sehr naive in meiner zweiten Band, zu glauben, dass ich nur geduldiger sein muss, um gute Qualität zu erreichen. Obwohl ich die Musik geschrieben habe, hat ein anderer angefangen die Agenda zu diktieren. Ich wollte nämlich zuerst das Programm fertig geschrieben haben, bevor ein Auftritt folgen soll, doch weil ich das nicht klar formuliert habe, hat unser Gitarrist einen Auftritt organisiert, mit dem ich bis heute nicht zufrieden bin. - Außer mit der Erfahrung, dass jede Band eine klare Agenda braucht.

Besonders tückisch ist, dass diese Situation einen Streit in der Band hervorgerufen hat, an dem ich nicht beteiligt war. Heute weiß ich, dass es besser ist, wenn jeder sich mit dem Bandleader streitet, anstelle wenn es zwischen den anderen Musikern abläuft.

3 Die Agenda steht, also formuliere die Methode

Schon vor 10 Jahren habe ich meiner ersten Band vorgeschlagen, dass es cool wäre ein Konzeptalbum zu schreiben und genau das wurde abgelehnt. Meine zweite Band war offener für diese Idee, doch die Überforderung ist eingetroffen, als ich die Meinung geäußert habe, dass jeder Musiker wie im Theater nicht nur das Instrument, sondern auch eine Rolle spielen können soll.

Damals habe ich die Idee aufgegeben, weil ich das Feedback grundsätzlich als Nein gedeutet habe. Heute verstehe ich, dass ich als Bandleader abwägen muss, wie groß die Schritte sein müssen, damit die Band die gewünschte Performance zeigt. Vielleicht sollte erst ein Song aufgenommen, bevor das ganze Album im Studio produziert wird.

4 Beziehungsprobleme in der Band bearbeiten

Genauso wie Beziehungsprobleme zwischen zwei Menschen auftreten können, können Bands auch durch persönliche Schwierigkeiten gestört werden. Eigentlich ist es viel schwieriger eine Band zu haben, als eine Beziehungen, denn du arbeitest nicht nur mit den Bedürfnissen von einem Menschen, sondern von etwa 4 Musikern.

Das kriegt besonders der Bandleader ab. Wie gesagt ist es besser, wenn mit dem Bandleader gestritten wird, als untereinander und genau das ist es, was es so schwierig macht ein guter Bandleader zu sein.

5 Übernimm und deligiere alle zentralen Aufgaben

Der Komponist ist nicht das gleiche, wie der Bandleader. Manche Bands komponieren ihre Musik gemeinsam, aber was einen Bandleader ausmacht, ist dass er seine Grenzen kennt und alles, was seinen Fähigkeiten übersteigt, er auf andere deligiert. Beispielsweise bin ich nicht in der Lage ein Artwork zur Musik zu generieren, mit dem ich zufrieden bin. Aber mir sind immer einige Menschen, auch Musikerkollegen bekannt, die das können.

Darüber hinaus muss der Bandleader ein Auge auf alle Aufgaben haben. Je nach Agenda können die Aufgaben folgende sein: Komposition, Probe, Studioarbeit, Artwork, Veranstaltungstechnik, Veranstaltungsorganisation, Werbung, Social Media und andere Webpräsenzen, Bandfinanzen uvm.

6 Erkenne wohin es hingeht

Es ärgert mich, wenn ich daran denke, dass ich die Richtung einer Band oft erst dann erkannt habe, wenn die Entwicklung gegen Ende läuft. Meine zweite hat diese Richtung eingeschlagen, weil wir ein massives Problem hatten. Ich habe Musik geschrieben, die 8 Musiker erfordert hat, aber nach und nach sind Musiker abgesprungen und anstelle dazugekommen und die Komposition habe ich nicht an die Gegebenheit angepasst.

Natürlich braucht jede Rockband einen Bassisten und an der Idee sollte man schon festhalten, aber das Prinzip wird mit folgender Lösung vielleicht klar: Ein Gitarrist lernt dann eben Bass und sucht sich noch einen Gitarristen für die Band.

7 Finde den Groove für die Band und halte ihn

Es gibt Bands, die überdauern Jahrzehnte und dann gibt es eben Bands, die nach einem Jahr aufgelöst sind. Damit so eine Entwicklung möglichst lange funktioniert, braucht die Band einen Arbeitsmodus, der zu den Musikern passt und dann muss es auch gehalten werden.

Wenn ein Musiker darauf abzielt Berufsmusiker zu werden und ein anderer sich definitiv dagegen entscheiden wird, dann wird der Arbeitsmodus dieser Band definitiv einen der beiden belasten.

Aber das ist eine Thema für die Frage: Wie finde ich die Band, die zu mir passt. Um den Groove zu halten, gehört es auch dazu, die richtigen Musiker zu finden, die gegebenenfalls den Groove unterstützen, anstelle ihm zu widersprechen. Auch das ist ein Thema für einen anderen Blockeintrag.

10 years ago I collected my first band experience and had the naive idea that it is enough to be the best musician to lead his band well. - I was so wrong!

I was thrown out of my first band because of a fight, so I started my own band and decided to do a better job and it all went better until I got one new problem that I did not know from the first band and then ... I had to wear my own band to the grave.

From my experience, other musicians may benefit, so I introduce: the 7 most important experiences one must have made to lead a band well.

1 Get to know the instruments and skills of the other musicians

That may sound normal at first, but often musicians are fixated on themselves. The reason why I sing in a choir and play bass and viola next to my keyboard is to write better for such instruments. - In my first band that was a topic of controversy! The guitarist was the bandleader and, due to many other issues, was so demotivated at the rehearsals that he no longer bothered to write the sheets for the keyboard. Pianists can not necessarily improvise on the basis of the guitar playing or a good ear and so it came just to the dispute, which was for me the end in this band. - From this experience, I have decided to play all the instruments a bit, to understand them better.

On the other hand, not only the instrument needs to be understood, but also the skill, the musician has. I've seen how composers wanted their music to be played some notes higher, and while that's not a problem for the guitar, the singer's voice may reach its limits.

2 Formulate the agenda

I was very naive in my second band, believing that I just need to be more patient in order to achieve good quality. Although I wrote the music, another one started dictating the agenda. Because I wanted to finish writing the program before a gig should follow, but because I did not say it clearly, our guitarist organized a gig that I am not satisfied with until today. - Except with the experience that every band needs a clear agenda.

It is particularly bad that this situation has provoked a quarrel in the band in which I was not involved. Today I know that it is better if everyone argues with the bandleader instead of between the other musicians.

3 The agenda is there, so formulate the method

Already 10 years ago I suggested to my first band that it would be cool to write a concept album and that's exactly what was rejected. My second band was more open to this idea, but the overburden has arrived when I expressed the opinion that every musician, should be able to play not only the instrument, but also a role, like in the theater.

At that time I gave up the idea because I basically interpreted the feedback as a no. Today I understand that as a bandleader I have to weigh how big the steps have to be to make the band perform as desired . Sometimes one song should be recorded before the whole album is produced in the studio.

4 Solve relationship problems in the band

Just as relationship problems can occur in a couple, bands can also be disturbed by personal difficulties. Actually, having a band is much harder than having a relationship, because you are working not only with the needs of one person but of about four musicians.

Especially the bandleader feels that. Like I said, it's better to fight with the bandleader than with each other and that's what makes it so difficult to be a good bandleader.

5 Take over and delegate all important tasks

The composer is not the same as the bandleader. Some bands compose their music together, but what makes a bandleader is that he knows his limits and gelegates everything that surpasses his abilities to others. For example, I am unable to generate artwork for my music I am satisfied with. But I always know some people, including fellow musicians, who can do that.

In addition, the bandleader must keep an eye on all tasks. Depending on the agenda, the tasks may be: composition, rehearsal, studio work, artwork, event technology, event organization, advertising, social media and other websites, finances and much more.

6 Know where it's going

It annoys me when I think that I often only recognize the direction of a band when the development is nearing its end. My second band took this direction because we had a massive problem. I have written music that has required 8 musicians, but gradually musicians have moved away and I have not adapted to the circumstances.

Of course, every rock band needs a bassist and you should stick to the idea, but the principle might be clear with the following solution: A guitarist then learns bass and chooses another new guitarist for the band.

7 Find the groove for the band and hold it

There are bands that last for decades and then there are bands that are dissolved after a year. For such a development to last as long as possible, the band needs a work mode that suits the musicians and then it has to be kept.

If one musician aims to become a professional musician and another will definitely decide against it, then the work mode of this band will definitely put a strain on either one.
