Fantastic Fest Review and Trailer: 'Bad Genius' Is a Slick, Remarkable Caper About Exam Cheating
Still remember with Perfect Score (Brian Robbins, 2004)? The film, starring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson is about the advantages of teenagers who try to steal the answer sheet of Scholastic Assessment Test exam materials so they can be accepted at their university of choice. Well, the story is almost as it is now spoken by Bad Genius, a teen drama directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya who previously successfully directed the horror film lesson Countdown (2012) which was elected to represent Thailand to compete in the Best Foreign Language category at The 86th Annual Academy Awards. Despite having a similar sounding premise, Bad Genius is a different story presentation when compared to the Perfect Score. With the script of the story written by Poonpiriya along with Tanida Hantaweewatana and Vasudhorn Piyaromna, Bad Genius is packed as a drama with many touches of tense and intelligent moments that will be able to hypnotize every audience. Clearly appearing strong as one of the best films of the year.
Bad Genius does not actually offer a completely new line of storytelling. The texts of the story that Poonpiriya, Hantaweewatana and Piyaromna share in the heist movie rules that are so familiar: the introduction of the main conflict that will be faced and the characters who will run the plan that will be compiled, the execution of the plan has been prepared and finally the internal conflict between the characters that will determine the fate and the relationship between these characters in the future. Familiar - apart from a few touches of nuanced criticism or "moral message" about the current state of education in Thailand (world?) At the moment. However, as a good quality heist movie, Poonpiriya succeeds in giving a very powerful storytelling, presenting Bad Genius in the rhythm of the story so regularly that success creates many tense moments that will be able to make the audience hold their breath. Sharp image arrangement also greatly helps Bad Genius to keep appearing binding in every minute of its duration.
The strength of the story of Bad Genius also successfully lifted from the depth of excavation characterization of the characters that appear throughout the film separation. Although the execution of the plan that has been composed by the characters becomes the main dish of the most attention, Poonpiriya did not forget the importance of the personality of each character that controls the conflicts in the story. Just look at how Lynn's character though looks so calm but comes with a variety of "dangerous" thoughts on his head. The deepening of the personal story between Lynn's character and her father (Thaneth Warakulnukroh) is also able to contribute some emotional moments in the film. Similarly, the character of the couple Grace and Pat, although initially felt as a character that adversely affects the character Lynn but presented with a characterization that is so humanist that it remains easy to be liked by the audience. Bad Genius also presents the character of the Bank (Chanon Santinatornkul) who is described as having the same intelligence as Lynn but with such a mysterious personality. The strong character coloring is what makes this movie more dynamic in the story.
The series of characters that can be well described is also successfully turned on by the solidity of the quality of the performers performance of this film acting department. Chuengcharoensukying, who acted as Lynn in her acting debut debut, comes impeccably in giving many character dimensions to the intelligent figure. Chuengcharoensukying's appearance not only keeps his character alive but also succeeds in making the audience feel the moral dilemmas he faces. Chemistry that exists between Chuengcharoensukying with Santinatornkul who plays the character of Bank and Warakulnukroh who acts as the father for Lynn's character also comes with so warm and convincing. The performances of the other supporting casters also come with a classy quality that makes Bad Genius a very smart, fun dish to keep up with its splitting.
