Actually they decay rather slowly and just wither before ones eyes. It takes years because they were built properly with wood that withstood the humidity and elements here. New houses are probably worse. Good question. Back then they built with red pine, cypress, or cedar. 🐓🐓

This is true in the Pacific Northwest as well, the buildings just linger and slowly decay. My great-grandmother's old house did just that... 50 years later, it was still completely recognizable. I believe the most recent owners of the property finally pulled the rest of it down.
