No Bra Day is a yearly worldwide observance on October 13 which was first observed on July, 9 2011, but within 3 years, it was finally moved to October 13th, which is known as the Month of National Breast Cancer Awareness.
The National ‘No Bra Day’ was adapted by an anonymous individual who conceived “No Bra Day” as a means to encourage females to enjoy being braless, and most importantly to become knowledgeable about the symptoms of breast cancer and for raising awareness of the serious disease.
Social media users are usually encouraged to post with the hash tag #nobraday.
THE REASON FOR NO BRA DAY:
BRA day is intended to raise awareness about breast cancer screening, alert females about the symptoms of breast cancer, and to encourage us to conduct regular self examinations.
At BRA Day events, those affected with breast cancer can attend Q&A speeches with leading plastic surgeons, and hear inspirational survival stories.
In Philippines, the No Bra Day is seen as a day to advance the cause of gender equality.
THE CONTROVERSIES OF #NOBRADAY:
The day is controversial as some see it as sexualizing and exploiting women’s bodies while at the same time belittling the serious disease, breast cancer. Some critics have described the event as being “purely sexual.”
Jean Sachs, CEO of Living beyond Breast Cancer, thinks No Bra Day is offensive. In his own words:
“I mean breast cancer is a life-threatening illness. It has nothing to do with wearing a bra or not wearing a bra.”
Gayle Sulik, founder and executive director of the Breast Cancer Consortium said, “But we don’t really pay attention to what’s going on with breast cancer. That’s a hugely damaging impact of this sort of message.”
