Suicide attempts among young adults between the ages of 21 and 34 have risen alarmingly, a new study warns.

A recent overall increase in suicide attempts among US adults has disproportionately affected younger adults with less formal education and those with antisocial personality disorder, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and a history of violence.

Data came from the 2004-2005 wave 2 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) and the 2012-2013 NESARC-III.
A comparison was done between them.

With the use of data from the 69 341 participants with 42% men and 58% women with mean age of 48.1 [17.2] years, the weighted percentage of US adults making a recent suicide attempt increased from 0.62% in 2004-2005 to 0.79% in 2012-2013.

In both surveys, most adults with recent suicide attempts were female (2004-2005, 60.17%; 2012-2013, 60.94%) and younger than 50 years.

Suicide attempts are important clinical events. They are a major source of distress, morbidity, and economic burden.

Most adults who make suicide attempts have anxiety or mood disorders and many have substance use disorders.

In addition, approximately 18% of individuals who attempt suicide make a second attempt during the following year.

In 2013, the total annual estimated economic burden of suicide attempts in the United States exceeded $8 billion.

Reducing suicide attempts is an important public health and clinical goal.

Building community and consistent engagement with those at risk may be best ways to help prevent suicide.

You can do the following things to know if a person is suicidal or not:

  1. Pay attention to risk factors, the suicidal death of someone close can cause them to consider suicide.

  2. Listen for verbal warnings, they always give some clues about what they are planning.

  3. Notice their emotions, check if they expressed a sense of personal failure, hopelessness, or guilt.

  4. Look for changes in behavior, pay special attention if the person is talking, reading, or writing about death/suicide.

  5. See if they seem disinterested in things they used to enjoy.
