No more flights will be authorized at the Mexico City airport due to saturation.
The administration of the current International Airport of Mexico City (AICM) will not allow more flights to be added from 7am to 11pm than those that are already available, due to security reasons, so the current terminal will only offer spaces to airlines in the dawn, while a new airport opens.
In the framework of the press conference on the results of the new policies against airline delays, Miguel Peláez Lira, general director of the AICM explained that the airport is saturated from 7 in the morning until 11 at night.
This Wednesday night, Javier Jiménez Espriú, next Secretary of Communications and Transport said that before the new airport that is being built in Texcoco, it could be ready in 2023, at least.
However, the decision to continue with the work of the New Mexico International Airport (NAIM) has not yet been made.
The flights that could have space in the current AICM would be those that the airlines request after or before the saturated strip.
Peláez Lira added that for the AICM to have guaranteed the operation from here to have a new airport, the government will have to provide public resources for its maintenance.
In addition, he pointed out that if required, platforms will be needed so that people can spend the night in the airport for the flights at dawn.
