I liked the ingeniousness of PAPI or VASIS.
A question regarding the lights' necessity though: isn't everything automated these days? Do pilots even land the plane?
The autoland is available on most planes but it also needs support from the airports. Only a few of them have it and not all pilots/airlines are using it, because of the internal regulations and the responsibility. Most pilots prefer to keep the control.
But the possibilities are there, pilots CAN be very lazy :)
If they are allowed to by the airlines regulations.
