You have to realize, the demon uses legality to a large extent. Familiar spirits are those attached to a family, due to some ancestors action.

All this being said, to protect yourself is to remove yourself from any activity to gain them access. Close those legal ties by breaking the curses, and then with the authority of the Creator demand them to leave.
