According to Australia's Daily Telegraph, bones from 21,830 dead Australians were removed and used in a nuclear research programme without their relatives' consent. The article, based on the publication of an Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency report, reveals that Australia ran its own nuclear research programme similar to the US 'Project Sunshine'. Nearly 5,000 bones came from infants and stillborn babies, and pathologists in major public hospitals were paid to provide samples and initially told to keep their participation ’confidential', The report also confirms that bones of other Australians were sent to the US for ’Project Sunshine'.
