Athens, a new experience and surprise

in #athens7 years ago (edited)

Two month ago, I went with my mother for a few days to Athens. My grandfather died last year and he was always swarming of Athens and the beautiful Akropolis. My stepfather gave my mum a trip to Athens for her birthday. One week after her birthday my mom and I resorted to the roots of my grandfather. I actually never was very interested into Athens and even Greece. But as a surprise for me, I liked it very much and afterwards I even was thinking about moving there someday. 268D071E-76C9-4D78-951A-CFC6E70BB5E9.jpeg

When we arrived in Athens it was dark already outside, but we had a wonderful hotel with a roof terrace, from where we could see the Akropolis. I know it’s not the best picture but if you see the circumstances we had, it was the best pic I could get from it this day. First when we came there the girl from the reception told us to not go on the terrace because “it’s too cold” she said. But we came from cold Berlin where we had snow one day ago, and now we were in warm Athens were we had 15 degrees Celsius by night in December. So we went up there and enjoyed the view by a drink and went to bed afterwards.

Next day, the first point on our bucket list was, as you can already guess, go to the Akropolis. Where we had to walk up the hill of Athene, the goddess of the Akropolis. On the way up we’ve seen many nice theatres from other gods of Greek mythology.

After the visit at the acropolis, we’ve been to a neighbourhood we’re anarchists and students rule the streets and also occupy some houses. It was very interesting to see after I heard the story behind the quarter “Exarchia”. A few years ago the people who live there had a dispute with the police from Athens, and a student lost his life because of shot from an officer. Since that day they have excesses every year on the day the boy was shot, in the “ghetto” of Athens. Moreover you can find a lot of graffiti and street art in exarchia. In travel guides they often dehort the neighbourhood, because of the high criminality and drug abuse at night. We didn’t notice any of these things. We found some very nice tavernas and cafes to have a mocca in Greek style and have a break after a long walk through big Athens.
Besides this I found some graffities from crews from Berlin.

On the next they our flight back was at 6 o’clock pm, so we had some more time to go shopping and have a last Greek meal at the market and tourist place Plaka.
