Abandoned Sh*t weekly contest #19 - Black & White
A road less travelled...
This is my entry for the Abandoned Sh*t weekly contest #19 -'Black & White!' #aswcontest
I took this shot of an abandoned wagon when travelling down the Karlskrall Pass in 2012 on our way to Merweville in the Karoo, South Africa. We had been warned by a group of bikers at the summit that there was no turning back as this is one of the most dramatic and steep descents offering a real challenge to the driver. The pass descends 238 vertical metres in just 3.1 kilometres. It has an average gradient of 1:13. There are a few section extremely steep at 1:5. The bikers were right and once on our way I knew there was no turning back. Down we went and finally when we reached more level ground I spotted this wonderful relic of an old abandoned ox wagon from another age.
I have since learnt that the road ( if you can call it one) and pass have been closed and access to the lower Karoo from the escarpment is no longer possible here.
Below are two views of the same old ox wagon.
Enjoy.
If you look carefully you can see the winding road descending from the top in the distance.
I was using a Canon 5D to take the photographs. They were shot in RAW and I used a piece of software called Tonality to convert to black & white.
