The Untapped Market of Space
Many people dream of becoming millionaires, perhaps billionaires, but what about trillionares? We might end up seeing the next trillionare by 2050. Some people think that Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos might end up being the first trillionare. However, lot of scientists agree that someone who takes advantage of the untapped resources of asteroids in space will be the first trillionare.
Take for instance, Davida, and asteroid roughly three astronomical units or three times the distance from the Earth to the Sun away from Earth. If someone were to mine Davida, they could yield a profit greater than that of 100 trillion dollars! The thing is that the fastest space craft we've built yet, Juno, achieved a speed of about 265,000 km/h or 165,000 mp/h for you imperial folks. At that speed a trip to Davida and back would take roughly 5 months, which isn't really that bad when you're taking home more than 100 trillion dollars. You might be wondering, then how come nobody has attempted to mine asteroids?
First of all it's going to cost you a lot of money to go asteroid mining. You are going to have to pay the staff, such as the engineers, the scientists, the janitors etc. You will also have to keep in mind that asteroids weigh a LOOOOOOOT. For instance, Davida, the asteroid we previously talked about. Has a mass of roughly about 3.84*10^19 kg. or 38,400,000,000,000,000,000 kg. The estimated cost of asteroid mining is 2.6 billion dollars! Thats a lot to lose.
But I believe that by the end of the 21st century, asteorid mining will be more popular.
