An Update on Our Asparagus

Good Afternoon, Evening, or Morning Steemit family.

My first post about #asparagus is here: https://steemit.com/asparagus/@brockolopolis/utilizing-the-gifts-the-land-already-has-for-us-this-time-asparagus - If any of you know how to make that link look pretty instead of having the whole code, please let me know how!

I wanted to let you know how things were progressing with our asparagus! I wrote about what was happening here with project: asparagus about three weeks ago. I was ultra nervous to cut down the asparagus that had grown last year to ground level. Those pieces are still dead for the few I left in untrimmed. However! We noticed while working on our no-dig garden here:

That we had some growth starting to happen!

No, I'm not talking about all those weeds!!

You'll notice the tall green guys, they're a bit little, so I won't harvest them this year. But if you look lower, there's little white pieces sticking out all around. Once the sun hits them, they start turning green.

A few days past the picture of that asparagus is today :)
This morning I ran out to the patch in the rain with my rubber boots on and snipped off the first two tall ones that I could find. We ate our first asparagus from our home at breakfast this morning. It was fantastic. The picture at the top is proof that I had em. The cherry tomatoes are from our Tiny Tims in the picture bellow. The picture was just taken, so you see we'll have more tomorrow! We're super glad to have gotten the Tiny Tims variety. They seem to be really tough plants, that produce a ton of fruit without getting very large. Also, it was an easy intro for me to meet my buddy @nateonsteemit when his competition he ran caught my wife in the winners circle and he had to plant some of them. I suspect these will become a regular variety for us as the years go by.

Questions or comments, fire away. I'm not proud - if you're reading this next year and wondering "what the heck do I do with these things?" ... ask and I'll respond.

Keep it real Steamits.

Sort:

Bad thing: my tiny Tim's died
Good thing: I have more seeds!

I'm gonna plant them in a box like we did our squash. Gonna do it outside and let good ol mother nature raise em herself, cause apparently I kill things that I try to grow and control inside.

Awe man! Well, like we've discussed and you've so graciously never neglected to remind me: your growing season is QUITE some time longer than ours, so you've got lots of time still! It doesn't take long for them to start hammering out some nice tomatoes!

I need some homegrown asparagus in my life. Garden game strong and getting stronger. Keep up the good work @brockolopolis

Thanks bud. I knew that I too needed asparagus in my life haha
Takes some dedication to get them started, I was lucky to be able to hit the fast forward button by moving into a home that had two patches already. I have seen places here that sell them a couple years old, which cost more obviously, or they wouldn't do it that way, but gives you a bit of a head start. If I recall correctly you are very limited by growing space though, yes?

That's awesome. Asparagus is one of our staples here, I'd be over the moon to have a bed or 2.

Very limited is an understatement. We are in a tiny apartment in the middle of DFW with awful commie landlords. Not really allowed to be growing here, though my anarchist instincts and free will tendencies are threatening to bust loose lol..

Currently looking and saving for some land but it seems more likely that we will have to start with a starter home and build some equity before we can into what we really want.

Hey yeah, i would think that there's area for some gorilla gardening around you?
Are there more difficult rules there to get land than a home in the city? That's how it is here for sure..

Gorilla gardening? Que es esto? What is this?

Yes and no. You have to understand the zoning rules as to what you are able to do on the land but once you get into county land, your options are near limitless. It just tends to be cheaper in suburbia. And we are not the most affluent of folks.

Similar rules to hear. We don't own where we live now, the spot we are at is perfect for right now though. I can't fire a long gun anywhere on my property (and handguns are for the range only) and we aren't supposed to keep any livestock. I intend to take all of those boundaries as suggestions more than rules.

As far as gorilla gardening goes, it's pretty straightforward. You just take the head off, stick it in the ground, and wham - Gorilla tree.
Pardon my lame humor.
The idea is that you take public land, or unused land and purpose it to grow discrete plants that you can go and harvest. For example, my dear wife and I went for a walk some time back and found that people had planted rhubarb bushes in some of the treed area. Their placement was smart, and it looked quite nice where they placed it, so nobody messed with it. We have beans that are my favorite called "runner" beans or "painted ladies improved" They grow a pretty little flower that tastes like half pea/bean. So people wouldn't pick flowers while walking down a path typically right? But you do, because you know what they are, because you put them there. And anything that you don't eat as a flower comes out as a nice silky green bean. The possibilities are quite endless, with a bit of imagination! There are books on this I know for sure. Not that i've read any of them. haha

Wow, interesting. Never heard the term. I'll check it out.
