AskSteem: What do you dislike about Steem?

in #asksteem6 years ago

After the recent post asking what people like about Steem I figured I'd make this one as well. Been getting a lot of comments lately about trolling/flag abuse and also some still annoyed by Steemit's account creation process which according to them is still quite glitchy.

So, what else do you dislike about Steem aside from the rewards or lack thereof?

Sort:

The dependence on Steemit inc sucks, one month they post updates almost daily and then they just disappear for weeks and right now, have most of their activity on Twitter instead of here lol. I would like at least a weekly update on what they are working on!

At least we now have steem engine making SMTs happen faster and probably better!

If we don't like our dependence on SteemIt Inc.

We should simply stop focusing on SteemIt, Inc and start rewarding the members of the community who are working with or without SteemIt, Inc's support.

Exactly, good words. Start to ignore and support the own people who work for us on the platform. Thats the way it will get to work and new future will come to steemit.

Yeah...weren't SMT's supposed to be done by now?

Can't agree more with you !

the steemcleaners. I'm not saying it's not good but this group got too much power.

Do you think the scope or approach of the Steemcleaners can be changed and if so, what would you think a better version would look like?

Each community should have their own scope because they know better for their communities. Steemcleaners might lower their scope and give communities more controls. This will lower your workload and better for communities to get more new users into the steem.

That's actually been worked on since last year and as more communities communicate with Steemcleaners the better it works. The real issue is that there are users who don't fit any communities and have no interest in them. They only care about getting as much money out of the blockchain as they can and its those ones who make giant botnets, steal identities, etc.

okay, thanks for your explanation. I feel your pain now. How to work with steemcleaners?

Best thing to do is just blog and curate normally but keep an eye out of either users or posts or voting that just doesn't look right. If something makes you take a second look and wonder about it, there's a reason. Use the reporting form http://steemcleaners.com/reports/new to report. If it's a mistake, it gets sorted out, but usually a gut feeling is right on.

For communities, the way is to just come chat on Discord and figure out what the Steemcleaners can do and what they can do together.

Those are actually separate things. I'm not in any communities right now. Partially because I hate discord...and partially because I hate being forced to upvote things, and haven't seen a community I really like.

Wonder if there's a maker community here...or a programmer community....

It was the same way in high school.

Some people just don't really join up into communities. They're not the type. Some just don't really know what community they fit into.

They're not like you. You're part of steem.chat and you're invested emotionally in steem. They're here to set up automatic bots and leave. They don't speak to other users. It's like phishing, its an automatic business transaction.

Yeah, I know. Though perhaps some of them could possibly be good users. There certainly are a ton of community members that are out for themselves and the money and are still part of the community in some way. Even I think about money...though I also occasionally do things that have nothing to do with it.

Of course, even if I was all about the money, I would have just made an automated vote service that's better than all the rest. :P Most of the people just about the money aren't really that smart...or they'd come up with better ways sometimes.

My point was just that being separate from individual communities does not preclude people from being good users.

Yeah that's a good point. There are a lot of users that don't join communities.

That has been quite a controversial subject, many say that they are too big as well and that they take sides on what to flag and what to ignore.

yah, it's ongoing controversial subject. I think communities should have more control on which to flag or to ignore.

Transparency is my biggest issue with it. They should post their evidence on the blockchain for the community to see, and not force people to go to discord to plead their case.

There's a lot of personal info involved so it really wouldn't be right to make people post it publicly. For example, someone may tell the Steemcleaners that so and so account is their brother named whatever. Even on the Discord if something is too private, it's kept like that. The comments themselves are all on the blockchain and have reference links so everyone can double check.

I have received no response from @spaminator why my contests were flagged only more downvotes.

Your contests are posts where people upvote for a share of the rewards. You did get a response, it just wasn't the response you wanted. https://steemit.com/faq.html#What_is_considered_spam_or_abuse

The only response I received as to why was from @enforcer48 who regularly plays the @playdice game which requires upvotes to participate, unlike my contests which did not require an upvote to win, so that is obviously not the reason I was targeted.

Do you speak for spaminator account? Will you acknowledge that upvotes were not required to win rewards in my contests, and there are plenty of contests that do require votes which have not been targeted by spaminator?

Didn’t know @playdice was a contest. /s

All I know is the creator had it cleared with the @steemcleaners and that’s good enough for me.

vote buying
and this is one of the reason I never recommend steemit to most people

Well there was always vote buying, now it's just more public. There's attention buying on other platforms as well called advertisement. :)

The way bidding bots are being used. In fact steem/Steemit would have been a better place without these "promotion services"

Retention / engagement, cause they both go hand in hand.
But the thing I really dislike is the distribution.

Well good thing we at @ocd and @ocdb are working hard on making distribution better, the low prices are sure helping with that too. ;)

Our focus on our own stakeholders. Instead of focusing on branding or marketing we are constantly focused on our own issues.

Like the push for 50/50, I don't think a bunch of investors looked a Steem and said... Nah, I don't want to invest in that because the curation rewards just aren't dialed in correctly.

I also dislike that as a community we do a poor job at rewarding those who are working here everyday, by putting the focus on stake is your stake... We have made it difficult to fund projects.

Some people have too much power
The community spirit is dying
Automation might ruin us

There is a definite problem with automation on other platforms. Like how Google wants to try to automate everything and has demonetized all sorts of videos, actually causing various businesses that were based on YouTube to fail. We haven't quite gotten to that point yet. We definitely need to be careful with how we automate and know when to use it to just augment humans.

Steem the Blockchain is becoming more and more a great place for all kinds of Dapps that we all love to use. I still can't wrap my head around how this should going to a future, if we still mine our Steems with Steemit.com on a non working Proof-of-Brain mechanism?
I would love to see Steemit.com become a SMT Dapp by itself, and the reward pool should be focused on Steempower holders, RC markets and Dapp development.

It isn't a dislike, but a slight annoyance. As a newcomer, the distinction of the different currencies and their uses is kinda challenging especially converting from one to the other.

I don't like vote buying as well. I once invited my friend on Steemit. When he saw that people are buying votes, he said he is no longer interested in this platform. I think there are a couple of more things I don't remember right now. Other than that I like it here :D
