Book Review- Looking For Alaska
NAME-LOOKING FOR ALASKA
GENRE-YOUNG ADULT FICTION
INTRODUCTION- 'Looking For Alaska' is the debut of famous author 'John Green'. The book was first published on 3 March, 2005. The book starts with Miles halter's introduction to his uneventful life. It is until he moves to Florida. As his destiny collides with Alaska Young his world moves upside down. She introduces him to a whole new world. A world full of mischief, adventures and recklessness. But she is more than that. A lot more deeper than the surface. This novel takes the reader to an exciting journey with Miles Halter and his friends looking for what has been lost. Searching for the truth among a pool questions.
Reasons to read 'Looking For Alaska' :-
- Alaska- Her mysterious and cryptic nature intrigues the reader. Her questions, her thoughts and her view on life is worth pondering upon. Her moody yet wonderful personality makes one love her even more.
Colonel- Colonel is personally my favourite character in this book. Colonel's relationship with Miles and Alaska is beautiful. He may seem like a carefree person at first but as the book proceeds his other sides are revealed. The way he leads his friends into every prank they pull out and takes responsibility to save them if anything goes wrong makes him even more precious. He is a loyal friend indeed.
Last Words and Miles Halter- Miles Halter has the ability to memorise last words of famous people. The mention of some of these amazing last words add even more effect to the book. Here are some examples and images:-
The book ends with Thomas Edison's last words
"It's very beautiful over there." I don't know where there is, but I know it's somewhere and I hope it's beautiful.
Pranks- The pranks pulled by Miles and his friends are the most fun part of the book. Alaska being the mastermind of all these. The writer perfectly captures the excitement, fear and nervousness that comes with the joy of being mischievous and naughty.
Easy and good for newbies- This book is easy to read and understand. It is not too lengthy so there's no chance of readers freaking out at first glance. Nor is it complex and too overwhelming. It is very interesting. So, overall it's a good book for beginners. Also it is a John Green book and obviously it does have some catchy quotes. That's a plus point.
The writer has portrayed teenage through his characters very brilliantly. The goods and bads of it, the feelings and emotions every person feels at that tender age, the fun, friends and the love that brews. The novel is a blend of blissful and sad times. I personally enjoyed reading this book. You have read this far. You may as well buy and try it. And dive into the great perhaps.
