একটা বিড়ালের গল্প শুনেন
এক বনের পাশে এক লোক বাস করতো; কিন্তু তার বাড়িতে প্রচণ্ড ইঁদুরের উৎপাত দেখা দিল- খাবার গুলো রাতের আঁধারে খেয়ে যায়,কুট কুট করে পোশাক গুলো কুচিকুচি করে ফেলে যায়,ধান গুলো চালায় নিয়ে যায়! এমন কি রাতে বিছানায় ঘুমোতে গেলেও নাকের ডগায় চড়ে বসে- না জানি কোন দিন লোকটির নাক কেটে চালায় নিয়ে যাবে ইঁদুরের পাল! আরো অনেক ক্ষতি করতে লাগলো ইঁদুরের পাল। ফাঁদ পেতে,চালা বন্ধ করেও যখন লোকটা ইঁদুরের উৎপাত থেকে রেহাই পেলো না; তখন অনেক ভেবে ভেবে লোকটি দূরের এক গ্রাম থেকে একটি বিড়ালের বাচ্চা এনে পুষতে শুরু করলো। বিড়ালের বাচ্চাটি দিনে দিনে বড় হয়ে একদিন বিড়ালে পরিণত হলো- রাতের আঁধারে ওঁৎ পেতে বসে বসে ইঁদুর ধরে ধরে মারতে লাগলো। এসব দেখে বাড়ি ওয়ালা তো বেজায় খুশি!
যখন ইঁদুর গুলো একে একে সব মারা হয়ে গেল- তখন বিড়ালের প্রতি লোকটার যত্ন কমে গেল,আগের মতো করে আর বিড়ালটিকে খেতে দিত না। পেটের জ্বালায় বিড়ালটি নিজেই মালিকের খাবার চুরি করে খেয়ে পেট ভরতে লাগলো। একদিন মালিক সেটা বুঝতে পেরে বিড়ালকে তাড়িয়ে নিয়ে গেলো; তাড়া খেয়ে ছুটতে ছুটতে বিড়ালটি গভীর জঙ্গলে এসে হাঁপ ছাড়লো।

একটু পরে পাশ দিয়ে হেঁটে যাচ্ছিল এক মস্ত বাঘ, বিড়ালকে হাঁপাতে দেখে বাঘ জিজ্ঞেস করলো,কী হে বিড়াল মশাই? তোমার পূর্ব প্রজন্ম তো স্বার্থের লোভে বন থেকে শহরে গিয়ে ছিল! আমাদেরকে সবাই বন্য বলে; কিন্তু তোমাদেরকে তো সবাই পোষ্য বলে! এখন তোমাদের আবার বনে কী!
বিড়াল বললো, আজ্ঞে মশাই, শহরে আর শান্তি নেই! উপকার শেষ হলেই সবাই ভুলে যায়,শুধু ভুলে যায়না;তাড়িয়ে আবার বনে বের করে দিতে চায়! স্বাধীন শহর গুলো প্রত্যেকদিন নতুন নতুন রঙে সাজে- রূপের বদল ঘটে; কিন্তু এই বনের মতো প্রকৃতি আর স্বাধীনতা সেখানে নেই!
একটু পরে একে একে বনের অন্য প্রাণিরাও বিড়ালের দুঃখের কথা শুনতে সেখানে জড়ো হলো।
বাঘ এবার বিড়ালকে বললো, কথায় বলে "ভাবিয়া করিও কাজ; না ভাবিয়া করিও না।" তোমরা স্বার্থের লোভে বন ছেড়ে শহরে চলে গেলে বলে তোমরা বিড়াল আজো 'বিড়াল'ই থেকে গেলে! মানুষ স্বার্থ শেষে তোমাদেরকে তাড়িয়ে বেড়ায়! অথচ আমাদেরকে দেখ- আমাদেরকে মানুষে ভয় পায়- আমরা মানুষর তাড়া খাইনা;বরং মানুষকে তাড়িয়ে বেড়াই!
এই কথা শুনে বনের অন্য প্রাণিরা খুশিতে হো হো করে হেসে উঠলো।
তখন বিড়াল কাঁচুমাচু করে অনুরোধ জানালো, আজ্ঞে মশাই, আমি বনে থাকতে চাই, বনে আমাকেএকটু জায়গা দিবেন!
বাঘ টিটকারির স্বরে বললো,আরে না না মশাই! আপনি উন্নত সভ্য প্রাণি,কৃত্রিম রঙের ছোঁয়া আপনার চোখে লেগেছে,এখানে আপনার আর মন টিকবে না- আবার হয়তো আমাদেরকে কোনদিন 'অসভ্য' বলে চলে যাবেন! আপনার মালিক যেমন স্বার্থপর বলে কাজ শেষে আপনাকে আর প্রশ্রয় দেয়নি! আপনিও স্বার্থের লোভে একূল ওকূল করছেন! তার চেয়ে আপনি চলে যান,আপনার শিখে আসা 'উচ্চতায়' আমাদেরকে আর বিরক্ত করবেন না!
আর হ্যাঁ, আপনার মালিককে বলে দেবেন- তিনি যদি বন কেটে বাড়ি না বানাতেন; তবে ইঁদুরের উৎপাত তাকে কাবু করতো না! দেখেন না! আমাদের সুন্দরবনে কোন ইঁদুরের উৎপাত নেই! লোনা পানির জোয়ারে তারা টিকতে পারেনা! মানুষ বন ধ্বংস করে যতো ভিটে বানিয়েছে,তার বাড়িতে ততোই ইঁদুর জায়গা পেয়েছে, ইঁদুরের উৎপাত তার বাড়িতে ততোই হয়েছে!
বিড়াল বললো, কিন্তু মালিক কিন্তু আপনাদের একটা উপকার করছেন,রাতে উঁচু বাড়িতে উন্নত আলো জ্বালিয়ে সারা বনকে শহরা করে দিচ্ছেন,আপনারা রাতের আঁধারে পথ চিনছেন,শিকার করতে পারছেন!
বাঘ এবার রেগে গিয়ে বললো, আপনার মালিক গাছ মেরে বড় বড় নীরস দালান তুলেছে; কাঠ,মাটির মর্ম সে কী বুঝবে! আমরা মাটিতে শুয়ে আরামে রাতে ঘুমাই; কিন্তু আপনার মালিকের মস্ত উঁচু দালানের আলো আমাদের চোখে এসে পড়ে- ঠিক মতো ঘুমোতে দেয়না! দেখছেন না! রাত জেগে জেগে বন্য প্রাণিরা সব মরতে বসেছে! আপনার মালিককে বলবেন,উনার উন্নত কৃত্রিম আলো আমাদেরকে শান্তিতে থাকতে দেয়না! আমরা দিনের বেলায় গাছের পাতার ফাঁক দিয়ে চুয়ে পড়া নরম আলো পেতে চাই; রাতের বেলা আঁধার পেতে চাই। অসময় কে সময় করতে আমরা অপছন্দ করি! দিনে দিনে আপনার মালিকের উন্নতিতে আমরা জায়গা সংকটে পড়েছি,আমরা ধ্বংস হয়ে যাচ্ছি! আপনার মালিককে নিষেধ করে দেবেন, আমরা সুখ চাইনা;শান্তি চাই। আমরা আমাদের বাস স্থান আর অস্তিত্ব বিলিন করতে চাইনা! যদি আপনার মালিক কথা না শোনে- তবে বলে দেবেন, বন্য প্রাণিরা সকলে মিলে একদিন আপনার মালিকের বাড়ি হামলা করবে!
আপনার মালিক বাড়িতে পাকা করে ঘিরে চিড়িয়া খানায় নাকি পশুদের জায়গা দেয়! বলবেন, বন্য প্রাণিরা তার নিকুচি করে! তারা প্রকৃতিতে বন্য হয়ে থাকতে পারে বলেই বন্য নামটা তাদের প্রিয়। তারা পোষ্য নাম চায়না!
বিড়াল বললো, মালিক কিন্তু ভালো, সব প্রাণিকেই খেতে দেয়!
বাঘ রেগে গিয়ে হুংকার ছাড়লো, তুই একটা দো মুখো! মালিক এতো ভালো তবে বনে এসেছিলি কিসের জন্য! তোর আর এই বনে যায়গা নেই! তুই আমাদের অস্তিত্ব বিলিন হওয়ার পক্ষে! এই বলে সব প্রাণিরা মিলে বিড়ালকে তাড়া করে একেবারে বনের ত্রিসীমানা থেকে বের করে দিল।
