SCULPTOR OF NOTE: ANTON SMIT - PART I

in #artzone6 years ago

When you visit the Anton Smit Sculpture Park near Bronkhorstspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa, you cannot miss the road where you have to turn. On the corner a magnificent sculpture is on display. Nothing subtle about it. In fact, that is how I discovered Anton Smit and his work. We drove past the vast head once, and I begged my husband to go and explore, so we stopped for a short while. I could not even begin to take in everything that I saw, therefore I promised myself to visit again and explore at my leisure. Two weeks ago I had an entire morning to kill, and I thoroughly made use of the rare opportunity.

The sculpture at the turnoff pales in comparison to the beauty that meets you inside the park. An abundance of larger than life sculptures are placed helter-skelter all over the garden. I could only gape in astonishment. The man has an utterly amazing talent. I took so many photos that I am not going to post them all at once. I want you to look at each and every photo in detail, and to show it all in one article might overwhelm your senses, as it did mine.

His work comprises extraordinary larger than life human figures, heads, angels, warriors, masks, each and everyone imbued with powerful emotion. When you look at these sculptures, it evokes almost involuntary reaction. I was at times completely overwhelmed, other times in silent awe, but never did I feel neutral when I looked at any of the pieces of art. Actually, I am sort of at a loss of words to describe my intense emotions. Maybe it will be close to the truth if I said that the sculptures emanate powerful emotions, and you cannot help but to respond to these feelings. As it was said by observers of his work:

"...his work is possessed of a raw, earthy power that feels innately African."

Anton works with a variety of mediums, including, but not limited to steel, metal, fiberglass, bronze, iron, stone and glass reinforced polymer. To me it seems that he uses whatever he deems useful. In the garden, for instance, is what seems to be a pile of bricks. However, when you look closer, it turns out to be another beautiful piece of art. The detail is incredible.

I plan to post more garden pictures in my next post. In this series about Anton Smit I will also share the inside of the gallery, my brief interview with Anton, his giant studio, as well as the unique coffee shop that is also on the premises.

APPRECIATE THE IMMENSE TALENT OF A REMARKABLE ARTIST!!!

Wow, a very talented artist indeed! There are so many precious gems like this in our country, no one can ever say South Africa isn't beautiful!

I can only agree with you. I love this country and all its gems. Anton also works in Cape Town for about a quarter of the year. Visit his site - see where his works are displayed in your area. His work is truly magnificent.

I enjoyed your post so much. The pictures are great. My favourite work is the half head. It reminds me of Sir Henry Moore's work. I have added your post to the Steemit Art Centre. I hope this gives you more exposure, my friend :)

Thank you, stalwart @deemarshall. I do not know S Henry Moore's work. I am away at work and my access to the internet is limited. I will definitely Google it as soon as I have full access. Brilliant work, though, right? By the weekend I will be posting works by Anton that are completely different to of what you have seen so far!

@minnaloushe this is a beautiful well written article about a wonderful artist and his amazing work. I’m so blessed that you wrote it and shared the experience with us! And I’m also bleesed that @deemarshall put this post on her Steemit Art Centre “ art gallery, because that’s where I happened to see it. I pray you will support her, and yourself, by posting more information about Anton’s artwork. I absolutely love your artwork, and I’d like to see some of that posted in her gallery as well. You could have quite a following gathered from there ! I will try to accomplish just that there myself, we can post a piece every seven days. Your artwork is so beautiful and unique, more people would love to see it I’m sure. By the way you created a beautiful sign for Steemit that your holding up! I of course love and appreciate the cross symbol on it. Is that a piece of old hymnal sheet music 🎶 you put there? Your a beautiful person on the inside and out! Lovely photo. May God bless you sister .

Lovely art, out in a small town, what a great find @minnaloushe

What an awesome find! Discovering a whole area of remarkable art, isn't that among the best surprises of life!? Glad you had a whole morning to visit, definitely looks like time well spent :)

You have no idea. I was raw with emotion when I drove away. I felt fulfilled and happy and in awe with what I have experienced.

Beautiful <3
