KINJEKETILE- A PLAY

Kinjeketile is a story of a man from Ngarambe, Matumbi. He relatively disappeared from his home. He returned after a few days and said that he had been possessed by a spirit medium called Hongo. Kinjeketile claimed to have communicated with the deity Bokera through the spirit Hongo. He encouraged his followers to overlook tribal differences and unite against the Germans who had extorted from them. He told his followers that their ancestors had commanded him to lead a rebellion against the German colonial empire. This helped start the magi maji rebellion. Kinjeketile gave his people holy water (maji) to protect them from the German bullets.
Kitunda, kinjektile’s chosen general having been inspired by the presence of the water is eager to go to war, but he is reprimanded by Kinjeketile stating that they are not yet ready. Kitunda exclaims that they are battle ready. Kinjeketile admonishes Kihinda to get the people united first but Kitunda insist that the people are already united and battle ready.
At the end, there is war, but victory is not attained. At Mahenge the stronghold of the Germans – many of the warriors are extremely defeated. Kitunda and some of the leader of the tribes are arrested and incarcerated. Kinjeketile is captured by the Germans, tortured and atrociously brutified, for refusing to renounce the power of the maji maji (i.e. the spiritual water). At the end, he is prosecuted to the point of his death.
