Nikolai Aleksandrovich Yaroshenko was born in Poltava on 13 December 1846 in the family of a Russian army officer. He chose a military career, studied at the Pontifical Academy of Poltava, and then at the Mikhailovsky Military Art Academy in St. Petersburg. Petersburg.
Even in the cadet corps, Yaroshenko attracted the attention of artist Ivan Zaitsev. In accordance with the will of the artist's widow, Mary Pavlovna Yaroshenko, her art collection was handed down to the City Art Gallery of Poltava in 1917. It included 100 paintings, 23 work albums with pictures, 4 statues of Nicholas Yaroshenko himself and a significant collection of the works of his colleague Peredvizhniki.
