एक दिन ईश्वर के अस्तित्व पर आक्षेप कर डाले । पांच मिनट
के प्रश्नोत्तर में ऐसे घिर गये कि जिह्वा पर मुहर लग गई।
मुंशीराम ने कहा - ‘महाराज ! आपकी तर्कना शक्ति बड़ी तीक्ष्ण
है । आपने मुझे चुप तो कर दिया परन्तु यह विश्वास नहीं दिलाया
कि परमेश्वर की कोई हस्ती (अस्तित्व) है।’’ दूसरी बार फिर
तैयारी कर के गयेपरन्तु परिणाम पूर्ववत ही निकला । तीसरी
बाल फिर पूरी तैयारी कर के गया, परन्तु तर्क को फिर पछाड़
मिली | मुंशीराम ने फिर अन्तिम उत्तर वही दिया - 'महाराज!
आपकी तर्कना शक्ति बड़ी प्रबल है, आपने मुझे चुप तो कर दिया
परन्तु यह विश्वास नहीं दिलाया कि परमेश्वर की कोई हस्ती है।’
महाराज पहले हंसेफिर गंभीर स्वर से कहा - ‘देखो ! तुमने प्रश्न
किये मैंने उत्तर दियेयह युक्ति की बात थी । मैंने कब यह कहा
था कि मैं तुम्हारा परमेश्वर पर विश्वास करा ढूंगा। तुम्हारा
परमेश्वर पर विश्वास उस समय होगा जब वह प्रभु स्वयं तुम्हें
विश्वासी बना देंगे ।'
भद्रता और दुरित के पाटों के बीच में
अब मुंशीराम भद्रता और दुरित की रस्साकशी में फंस गये ।
एक तरफ विषय वासना के असुर की प्रबल शक्ति मुंशीराम को
अपनी तरफ खींच रही हैं और दूसरी तरफ महर्षि की बलिष्ठ
भुजाएं अपनी तरफ इस रस्साकशी में मुंशीराम विकल हैं ।
वेश्या के कोठे पर
इसके बाद मुंशीराम ने फिर जहरीली शराब पी । शराब ने
इतना जोर दिया कि पांव जमीन पर नहीं पड़ता था । मित्र के
साथ वेश्या के घर जा पहुंचे । कोतवाल साहब के पुत्र को देखकर
सब सलाम करके खड़ी हो गई । घर की बड़ी नाई को हुक्म दिया
कि मुज़रा सजाए जाए । उसकी नौंची के यहां कोई रुपया देने
वाला बैठा था । उसके आने में देर हुई । न जाने मुंशीराम के मुंह
से क्या निकला । सारा घर कांपने लगा । नौंची घबराई हुईदौड़ी
आई और सलाम किया । उसने क्षमा मांगने के लिए हाथ बढ़ाया।
और मुंशीराम नापाक, नापाक कहते हुए नीचे उतर आए।
मुंशीराम महर्षि का भाषण सुनकर मोहित तो हो गए परन्तु
विषय वासना की भयंकर लहरें से उसे बाहर नहीं

मदिरा, शायरी, वासना की रस्सियों से मुंशीराम को अपनी तरफ
। खींच रहे हैं । मुंशीराम संशय की भयंकर नदी में बहे जा रहे हैं ।
