The street of Rome at Night
When I saw this painting, I immediately thought it was Paris. And although the picture was written in 1898-1900, I want it to be an illustration to the novel "Arch of Triumph" by Remarque and in my head, Joan is on her way to meet Ravic.
But all I know is that the artist, with the help of light and shadow, tried to strengthen the emotionality of loneliness and show that man is just a slight stroke of a brush in the dark alleys of the city.
But the picture attracted me even more than that. 2 faces, one on the house, and the other turned out from the spots. Can you find it in the picture?
If not, I lined them).
The mask on the house between the windows is clearly an element of the picture. The second person from a white spot reminds me of Pinocchio). Still, by the way, one figure is located behind Pinocchio and reminds me the Death. Here is such an ordinary walk of a woman on the street of Rome, turned into my head in the search for various images.
The Polish artist Aleksander Gierymski (1850-1901) is the author of "The street of Rome at Night".
The Poles call him one of the most outstanding representatives of realism.
He published a large number of illustrations of Warsaw, first of all, he painted streets, alleys, and he gave a different view of the sights of the city. He did dozens of drawings and sketches of the different streets, showing his occasional observations of the city life episodes.
Unfortunately, the artist suffered from a mental illness, he was treated in Vienna, and then went to live in Italy. However, the disease did not prevent him from traveling through Europe, he visited Paris, where he faced impressionistic painting, but it did not affect his work.
By the way, the years of writing the picture coincide with his visit to Paris (before his death he was there twice: 1898-99 and 1900), so that Paris may have influenced him.
The work that I published is in the collection of the Lviv Museum. Basically, the works of Gierymski are exhibited in Warsaw.
