Édouard Manet, Stéphane Mallarmé and Edgar Allan Poe - Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
In 1870, Stéphane Mallarmé translated Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poem ''The Raven'' to french. Édouard Manet illustrated the book and he made 4 lithographs for this poem.
The illustrations of Manet gives us the young Mallarmé in Poe's world. But unfortunately The New York Public Library tells us “the publication was not a commercial success.”
They published 240 books and each of them sold for 25 Francs.
