My First digital drawing at Medibang!

in #art6 years ago (edited)

A few weeks ago I promised myself I would stop feeling useless. This in turn led me to start learning things I had been procrastinating since basically my early teens.

These things were Learning to Draw and Learning to Code.

Here on this post I'll explain my adventure while going through my first digital drawing using the Medibang Paint Pro Software.

I thought I should start with something simple and rather quick to make... So yeah, I instantly thought of a sword.

But... Why Swords?

Because I've always had this fascination for medieval weapons and armor and I've always used to scribble random swords on the edge of my notebook's pages and WHABAM, so hey why not? If it's something I could draw on paper, then why not draw it digitally since i'm a first timer over here?

1.- Drawing the Sillhouette

I decided to go with a simple claymore design since I could probably draw it without too much free mouse movement (because drawing on mouse SUCKS) The actual shape was not that hard to make out, I've been drawing (Trying to) swords for a while now so this shouldn't be that hard... But you guys saw how that turned out, lol.

The edges weren't that well drawn nor symmetric but hey give me a break, I've had literally 0 background experience on this so that's why I didn't give myself such a hard time for trying to make the perfect drawing. I wanted to go for something simple and quick to make.

2.- Drawing the Shadow

Once the main sillhoutte was done, I thought I should go for a quick and effortless shadow so the drawing could feel a little bit... more real.

The detail that was driving me crazy was that I couldn't get the shadow outline to match the original base shape of the sword and that was driving me a little bit crazy but I remembered i'm not perfect and that I should at least try to finish the drawing before giving up on it because I didn't like some details on it. I managed to finish it nonetheless. but when the painting came, that's when I really started to experiment.

3.- Colouring and... Giving a Story to the Sword?

You see, as I started to color the drawing and add some details (which I did in like only one layer because i'm dumb, lol) I kinda went crazy with it. I managed to define the pommel, the hilt and the guard. I then decided to add some color to the blade as well, I tried on some dark grey to add a little depth to it but it didn't work out as I expected.

The real crazy ideas start with the shadow colouring. I wanted to simply dump a cube of paint into it, but when I did, it coloured it in this sort of weird half colored and half empty shape... And I absolutely loved it and decided to go ahead with it. To top it all, I used the fingerpaint(?) brush to add a sort of slice motive to the shadow. In my mind, this made it look like the shadow of the blade told a different story than the actual blade did.

The message I ended up or like the story I wanted to tell with this drawing is something akin to the fact that the shadow of the blade is telling the truth while the sword itself represents a lie. It's like if the blade was broken on the inside, or the soul it belonged to was decimated and corrupted while it still showed up as if it was perfect.

But that's it, I got nothing else to develop with that idea...

So, this was my first digital drawing and it was actually a lot of fun to make, so i'm definitely hoping to check your thoughts on the comments down below! I really want to improve in any way I can with my drawings and that includes your suggestions and tips, so type away my friends! I'll see you on the next one!

Here's a cropped image of the actual finished product because I lost the original file xd

PD: If you guys know of any art communities I can join and meet people so I can learn bit by bit to draw better and just meet nice people overall, then don't doubt even one second to mention them down in the comments below! Bye guys!

For a first time drawing, with a mouse (which is hardcore lol), this is good considering how much things you found out in this one project only. I imagine you'll progress blazing fast if you keep this up. And I love the story as well, it's deep.

One thing you forget about this artwork, is naming it. This is your first digital artwork, it's special. Name this sword, save it, and months later after you progress and improve, look back at this and your other early artworks again. It's good for motivation.

Keep slaying with your artwork, @volderhein!

Omg I totally forgot about naming it! I was so focused on pointing all the details out and getting it published that I forgot about that. If I had to think of a name right now, I would probably name it something like... The Forgotten Claymore or something along those lines. I don't want to name it like another corrupted/sealed sword I got in my repertoire of characters because that one has a whole different context and background but i'd be lying if I said it wasn't inspired on it. I'll probably talk about it in the future when I can actually draw exactly what is in my mind into paper.

And hey man, thanks for the nice words on this drawing, it really helps me to keep doing these experiments and see what other things i'm good at! I really wanted to learn how to draw but I never gave it the time it deserved. But hey, it's never too late I guess!
