How to go freelance and make money with your illustrations!

in #art7 years ago

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to earn money with your illustrations? Have you already taken some commissioned work, but aren’t sure how it should really be done? I ask myself repeatedly about how to sell art for a living. It can be a fun and challenging experience, but it does have its issues. Before you try to sell your art, there are some things you should do.

  1. Be yourself
Make the stuff you really want to make and put it out into the world. ‘Self promo’ in the social media sense can be a bit soulless in my opinion... Who cares? Everyone’s promoting something.

  2. Don’t ever stop.
Art, illustration, design, animation – it’s a long game. Focus on the horizon.

  3. Be brave.
Take risks and believe in yourself. Tell yourself how great you are, and how great you are going to be. Even if the evidence doesn’t quite match up yet. It will ;-)

Be sure to continue to do inspirational artwork for yourself :-)

Super inspiring content ,amzing . Im freelancer ,I have few good comisions ,but I cant live only with making money with designs. Im wondering what is the main key . Thanks 🙂

I started freelancing as an illustrator with other tips, ha-ha:) Like "I NEED MONEY TO BUY FOOD FOR MY DOG":)

One thing to quickly gain traction [assuming you have a portfolio of samples --- remember portfolio doesn't mean clients had to hire you for it....]

Find companies already using similar illustrations...
Reach out to them telling them where specifically you could help
Show them your work
Offer your services

A mistake freelancers make (and I did too) --- you try and preach to the un-converted.

Waste of time!!!

Reach out to those who already see the value in what you do. Yes, this requires some digging and research. That's what separates the weak from the strong :D
