Art Attack #131: Fishing with the Waif in a Watercolour Forest 🎣

Hey Steemit!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

So we're still on our streak of posts where I share about art pieces I did for those in my chat who redeemed free art over on my Twitch channel! One of the perks of being Twitch affiliate is having customisable channel redemptions so anyone in chat can trigger different stuff using channel points! Since I'm an artist, I thought I'd reward my loyal viewers with free artwork at 150K channel points!

This next request was by one of my regular viewers turned streamer, who goes by bboyxyzer (aka bboy) on Twitch! He’s been a longtime supporter of mine so I was more than happy to work on his request of drawing him and his waifu Keqing from Genshin Impact, fishing in his favourite place in Genshin - Huaguang Stone Forest in Liyue!

This is what the place looks like in-game and is probably one of my favourite places as well.

I also went to take some screenshots of my own from the game so I could have a more holistic picture of the place to incorporate into the background.

I could tell this piece was going to be a big one, since I was drawing a foreground, background and characters. And for this one I was a little ambitious and wanted to challenge myself to try a totally different art style. I thought of trying a watercolour style since I thought it would match the background of Liyue which is modelled after Chinese architecture and landscaping. So these were the references I used, and I think you can see where I'm going with this.

And this was the sketch I came up with! I wanted to have some mountains connected by bridges in the background, with bboy and Keqing sitting in the middle of a rock in the pond and fishing since he specficially requested that.

The next part was lining them and since I wanted the background to be watercolour-ish, I only focused on lining the characters.

Then it was time to colour! This one took a while since Keqing (like all other Genshin characters) is ridiculously detailed. So I tried my best to include all the details in her outfit while maintaining the chibi look. For bboy, he requested I draw him in his favourite outfit with a grey hoodie and striped shirt.

I’ve never tried this style before and haven’t done digital watercolours at all, so I was really unsure how to actually do it past the sketching stage. But I found this time lapse drawing of a Chinese temple done on Procreate by Sketchbook Explorer that was kind of the style I was going for and it somewhat helped.

I tried to follow his style of colouring but it was still tricky since this style didn’t rely on bold outlines but a lot of layered colours in different shades, and I kept thinking I was screwing up by colouring too much or too little. I didn’t really know how to balance the colours with the light outlines either, but I tried my best to mask it with the lighting effects and at least I managed to draw bboy and Keqing quite nicely. The rock they were sitting on was a little hard to colour so I kinda gave up on the details.

Eventually we end up with this as the final piece:

Overall, I think it ended up looking alright. It didn't look too finished but I honestly didn’t know what else I could do so I left it at that. At least bboy loved it, which was a huge comfort since I was pretty nervous about it since it was my first time trying digital watercolours.

Here's the full timelapse:

For these art requests I try to challenge myself to do something different or out of my comfort zone and this was definitely very different compared to what I'm used to. But I think it was a nice experience trying a new art style! I don't know if I would do it again though since it was kinda stressful. But I'm glad my viewers are open to me trying new styles as well.

I do stream on Twitch almost everyday so if you wanna claim some free art from me feel free to hang out and maybe one day you'll get your own unique artwork too!
