Speed drawing contest: In black #cookiedrawing
Good day Steemit,
So I found out @cookiespooky was holding a speed drawing contest. I thought it was a good idea but I had no intention to enter anything. I didn't feel like drawing at that moment and especially I didn't feel like drawing something that I would feel has to look good. Usually when I start drawing with the intention to make something "good" it doesn't work out. It is when I just start doodling that things come out that I myself actually like.
So yesterday evening I was practicing some portraits using www.quickposes.com. It's a website that allows you to choose the kind of images you want to draw and shows them for a set amount of time. In my cases I was practicing portraits and I had set the timer for 90 seconds on each portrait. This, for me, is way to fast and I didn't get much down on paper on most portraits.
But the last one went quit well and I liked the original foto because it was a heavy black and white portrait with lots of contrast. So remembering @cookiespooky and his contest I decided to follow up these initial 90 seconds of sketching with some more work in calligraphy ink to see how far I could get in the remaining time.
So for the process I did the initial sketch with a multicoloured ballpoint pen. Inspired by @arthurgain and his post on his sketchbook. I messed around with some blue pen to try and work in some highlights in my black pen drawing but it didn't quite work out.
After that I used 2 brushes, calligraphy ink and water to fill in the sketch and create some more volume. I mainly used the bigger brush also so for the finer lines. It seemed to work just fine and a bit more natural than the fine brush. Only on the eye did I really use the finer brush. Thinning down the ink with water is how I got the different tones.
I hadn't used ink to make a portrait before but I really like it! I actually did another straight after but I put more than 20 minutes in that one. So I won't enter it But I still would like to share it. I think I'm going to make a lot more like this one just to experiment a bit and see where it takes me. I'm a happy camper :)
Thank you @cookiespkooky
