"Casablanca" as Pop Culture Icon
Even if you've never watched the movie "Casablanca" (1942), you know some of the lines, such as:
• "I'm shocked – SHOCKED! – to discover gambling has been going on here."
• "Of all the gin joints in all the world, she walks into mine."
• "You played it for her – you can play it for me." (This is often misquoted as, "Play it again, Sam.")
In the book, "We'll Always Have Casablanca: The Life, Legend and Afterlife of Hollywood's Most Beloved Movie", author Noah Isenberg dissects one of the most popular films of of all time. He looks at the casting process, as well as the haphazard writing process. He also discusses how popular culture embraced the film, and why so many people love it.
This is a well-researched volume that draws upon interviews with filmmakers, and quotes scholarly works that examine Casablanca's effect on WWII audiences, as well as how we view it today.
If you haven't yet seen "Casablanca" we encourage you to do so soon. If you have seen it, we hope you'll pick up a copy of this fascinating book.
