Interesting points and nicely illustrated. But what might the concept of "control" mean for more surrealistic art... the desire to control the non existent or the subconscious?

About the non-realistic art styles and movements, I think it is even more a matter of control (and a matter of learning by narrative and non-verbal patterns). I'll write a post about it.
Same thing about surrealistic images: the simple fact to create images out of inner feelings and concepts makes them visible, not in the darkness anymore. Images are a powerful way to tame the unspeakable :)
