#SculptJanuary19 Day 8 | Jekyll & Hyde

in #art6 years ago (edited)

It's been a while since the last time I shared my 3D modelling process of some of my creations with you. So I think I'll do that again now, and this time it's my best sculpt January entry so far.

I'll be honest here I didn't know what Jekyll and Hyde was exactly and if not for this challenge I think I'll never know. Or maybe later. What I ended up create is not Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in particular, rather the two personalities that represent said characters. That is because I understand what the theme is about when I saw some of the participants' entries.

#SculptJanuary19 Day 8 | Jekyll & Hyde

Some interesting sculptures that helped me understood the theme is a teddy bear, half cute and half monstrous. Or a sheep looking to the mirror, but he is a wolf in the reflection. Pretty creative take on the theme, the latter one. While you can create the two characters from the novel, you can also create things that represents two personalities of good and evil. And this is my Jekyll & Hyde sculpture.

Sculpting

While it is recommended to start by poly model the base head shape for easier sculpting time, I've grown too fond of sculpting right away with a sphere from a subdivided cube. Pull down the chin, define the shape of the jawline and the head using the grab brush and I have my starting head.

I usually start with the nose to foresee the face, but this time I started with the eye sockets, then the nose to the eyebrows, then the mouth. Of course, whenever I do this the result may stray a little from the defined facial feature positions.

I was going to create Dr Jekyll first, but then the idea of the final scene came to mind and I re-shape the overall head and face to look more menacing, but he look funny at the moment. I probably have to start using reference so I don't get lost in the dark in the 3d modelling process.

I figured to look more menacing instead of looking like a clown I removed the smile and...

Bam! Made him show his teeth with the wide smile. The hair makes him look like the Green Goblin when seen from the side like that. As you can see I started to go into the smaller detail in this stage.

Second Sculpt

I sculpted Jekyll's face, or rather, the good personality face because that's not how Dr Jekyll look like. Then I had to export it as .obj file and made the slice in Blender 2.79 because 2.8 don't have the BoolTool addon yet. Then imported it back to 2.8. Did a little more sculpting on the sliced edges for a more natural 'break' look instead of clean slice look.

EEVEE Lighting

The one on the left is the real-time render preview in Eevee. After adding some more details--the bowtie and the monocle, and the mask shards--I decided to create the teeth all fangs and the eyes glow purple and, boy, do I really like how it look. What are those messy tangled stuff on the right, you may ask? Those are the lamps, a bunch of area lights for the, well, lighting.

And that is how my version of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde was made. Took me 11 hours to create this, including the falling asleep on my laptop.

I made two versions: one with the top hat and the other without it, because it looks so scene symmetry-breaking and it bothered me a lot.

Let me know what you think in the comment section. Criticism are always welcome. I have another sculpture I want to share, something that certain spider around here asked me to do months ago (sorry about that). Probably with or without the step-by-step process, but, we'll see. Thanks for stopping by and I'll see you in the next one~

Wowiiiiieeeeeee!! Thanks a ton, curie. You people are the best! ^^

There are so many characters that I don't know about so I'm not surprised that you were not that familiar with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde :) But I see that you've done a good study as your result is outstanding! It looks dangerous and a bit creepy - just like it should be :)

I'm looking forward to seeing the sculpture that certain spider asked you to do ;) I'm sure it will be stunning!

Thank you for sharing the progress of sculpting with us.

Congratulations on your curie vote and have a great rest of the weekend!

Yeah, I read about the novella and the characters a little bit. I've heard the names a couple of times before but never knew what they were, and now I find these characters interesting.

I'm happy to share this and some tips and tricks that I know too, but I'm worried that sculpture would look disappointing. Because, well, I kinda think it is XD

Thank you for the comment, you have a great restof the weekend as well! ^^

I think that we are our worst critics ;) I'm sure that sculpture doesn't look as disappointing as you think :)

I don't know Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde but your sculpture of them is a really cool one. It looks kinda creepy but I guess that's what you are going for and it is kinda funny how the "good guy's face" got lost near the creepy face.

I love the light illuminating there, it kinda gives the creepiness a subtle look.

They're characters from an old novella about a doctor who have 2 personalities called Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, in case you're interested. Calling it creepy would be a compliment for me, because that's what I wanted for the sculpture and the lighting, so thank you~

It sounds like a really interesting one, maybe I will check that up.

Oh, you definitely did nail it with the creepy look and feel... My pleasure!

impressive art work! at the same time a little scary thanks for sharing

Thanks! To look scary is what I aimed for for this one

Great 3D art you got there. You are awesome and your skills are none to be compared.. I have every piece in there

Thank you! ^^ I really appreciate that, but 'incomparable' sounds a little too far for me because I don't think that I even half as good as pro 3D artists out there.

Yea... But the fact that you are trying is worth while

Really cool ! Love the concept and the result is well illustrated <3 The bad man revealed under the cracked face !! I love it <3

Great step by step presentation, also, @rainite <3 !!!

Congrats for curie :D

Oooh this one is lovely! I really like how you lighted the sculpture, the purplish glow from the eyes make this one somewhat sinister, totally channeling the Hyde persona.

Nicely executed idea and congratulations for the curie vote, Adam :D.
