found this awesome photo browsing steem. wanted to do a quick sketch but it turned out to be a 2 hour session in the end! didn't actually get the light in the end but the search was fun, and i'm not unhappy with the result either (:

did a quick sketch first which felt like a really good start. unfortunately it was too small for my choice of medium (really thick graphite stick, 2B) and it turned sour quickly. so a promising start doesn't always lead to a good drawing.

so i restarted. and the second quick sketch didn't look so promising at first. but i talked myself into continuing - there's always something there, precision is not an issue, time is an issue - the like
2.jpg

as i defined some features the little girl in the drawing developed an angry expression, like the one gets when learning to whistle, blowing only air, spit & frustration
3.jpg

still pretty intense concentration, but no sound! this is my favorite phase, don't even bother to scroll down, i'm just ruining it from now on haha
4.jpg

adding more shade and texture, trying to understand the volume and light. not really getting it
5.jpg

ok, no choice now, lets bring out the eraser! lips need radical adjustment, other parts as well
6.jpg

looks like she's given up on whistling. and i'm still looking for a decent light/volume
7.jpg

some more work on mouth, chin, cheeks, eyes, hair and refining shading
8.jpg

and i think this is as far as i can take it for now

the resemblance is not striking but that wasn't the idea to begin with. the graphite stick was a deliberate choice in order to free myself from "realism temptation" from the get go. didn't actually escape all that much but i had fun working on it and i like the emotion it conveys. hope you enjoyed it as well, thanks!

thanks to @mollywarhol and her sister for the great pic !

Fabulous job and I think you captured the light pretty darned well. I have to use erasers too. You know we can just call it "rendering" it is a thing. All kidding aside I love to see this kind of work from photos - something I don't do well.

haha rendering it is yes, thank you, i'm happy you like it! i prefer to work with live models but who has time for that?!

It's nice to see a full accounting of the creative process along with the end result. Posts such as these are an asset to Steemit.

thanks for the kind words @phoblographer, its not rare that i like a phase of a creative process, or the process itself, more than i like the end result, or more than what i imagine the end result could be - if only i knew when to stop haha
also thanks for the resteem!! its the first resteem of my stuff that i've come over, awesome surpise!

The post is awesome !!

thanks @robertscrutcher, glad you think so!

never seen that kind of pencil before. I mean I use gradient pencils but just that shape is different

the koh-i-noor hardmuth 10.5 mm graphite stick, its great, mostly for broad bold strokes but you can get away with some finer stuff too. interesting textures result depending one your stroke angle and pressure. and also the way you sharpen it.

awesome! that's really cool. thanks for informing me! love trying new tools and techniques. check out some of my work if you want ;D followed and up voted you...... btw excellent art work

thank you dude, i'm happy you found this helpful and that you like my stuff! i'm always looking to follow artists (:
keep it up and give me a heads up if you decide to experiment with the graphite sticks, i'm curios how it will impact your manner. i tend to be messy and imprecise so its right up my alley

arts all about enjoying yourself through expression my friend if your doing that your succeeding. keep it up! it looks awesome. btw... my work start out super feathery as well just to map things out once I get a clear vision of where things go I just solidify lines with harder weight. love growing a artist community on steemit its actually so helpful at times.

yeah, its a pretty vibrant community, wish i had joined sooner hehe

A beautiful drawing of a beautiful picture! (That photo was incredibly crisp and beautiful!) I know you said that's as far as you think you can take it for now, but do you plan on doing anything more with it in the future?

i don't know, i mean this drawing was just something i felt like doing on the spur of the moment, just cause i liked the photo. i don't know if i like the drawing as much as i liked the photo hehe. but who knows, i still have it lying around with the more recent stuff so i might
