Dieric Bouts (living c.1448 died 1475) The Virgin And Child - The National Gallery, London
The early Netherlandish school
In an interior, and before a once-folded and richly brocaded cloth of honour, the Virgin suckles the Christ child. As always in the 15th-century Netherlandish paintings the material of the cloth of honour is a contemporary and possibly identifiable fabric.
The Christ child is seated on a cushion placed on a ledge. Bouts worked at Louvain and his style is strongly influenced by Rogier van der Weyden.
Enjoy the painting.
Next in the series is: Gerard David (active 1484, died 1523) The Virgin and Child with Saints and Donor.
