Calling All Artists and Designers For A Good Cause

As I have mentioned in previous posts, my daughter had a stroke as a baby. As a result, she has a very week left hand and arm. If you can imagine going through life with just one hand, you will quickly realize how you might struggle to do things that you now take for granted.

For instance, imagine a little girl trying to tie her hair back into a ponytail with one hand.

Or trying to draw a straight line with a ruler, with one hand. Or pounding a nail with a hammer, or opening a jar with one hand. How difficult it would be to pick up a heavy box, or even lift a baby out of a crib.

The world was designed with two-handed people in mind.

Just take the next hour and mindfully observe how often you use both hands to complete a task. As a mom to a child with just one strong hand and arm, I can attest to the fact that the struggles the one-handed person faces daily are endless.

My daughter, now 17 has never complained about the impact the stroke has had on her life, which far exceeds being one-handed. She takes everything in stride and is the happiest person I know.

My daughter and I often talk often about what kind of inventions would make her life easier, and now there is a chance for artists and designers to help children and adults like my daughter, bring these types of inventions to life.

MatterHackers.com is holding a contest for individuals to design a 3D printable tool to assist those with limited use of their hands. The winner will receive an Ultimaker 3D printer, complete with materials and accessories. Everyone who enters will receive the satisfaction of knowing that their idea could change many lives for the better.

I am not connected to this contest in any way. I just know, after seeing the phenomenal posts here on Steemit, that there are many kind-hearted and talented artists, designers and engineers who can make a difference in the life of children and adults like my daughter.

Just think, if every idea that was submitted to this contest became an actual product that helped the hundreds of thousands of people who do not have optimal use of both hands. How incredible that would be.
