Walks around Saint-Petersburg#59. Stroganov Palace.

The Stroganov Palace is a palace built in the center of St. Petersburg on Nevsky Prospekt in 1753 - 1754 by the project of the Russian architect of Italian origin Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Stroganov Palace is designed in the style of Russian Baroque and is one of the oldest works of the architect. In addition to Rastrelli, architects Mikhail Zemtsov, Andrei Voronikhin, Karl Rossi, Ivan Kolodin and others took part in the creation of the palace.

Such short terms of construction of the Stroganov Palace suggest that huge resources were used for its creation, both human (a large number of architects and construction workers) and financial ones.

Stroganov Palace in the plan forms a courtyard, in the center of which there is a patio. Perhaps in the patio area as early as 1793 there was a garden, which was created by the architect Voronikhin. Today the patio garden is recreated according to the pattern of the past. In my photos, I tried to display that cozy world in the center of St. Petersburg, which can be seen in the courtyard of the Stroganov Palace.

The palace from the moment of its construction was intended for the Russian statesman, count, senator and real secret adviser Alexander Sergeevich Stroganov. It was he who began to collect his famous collection of paintings and works of art in his palace.

Count Alexander Stroganov owned the palace in the period from 1756 to 1811. The next owners of the Stroganov Palace were descendants of the Stroganov family among whom one can mention the Count, Russian statesman, archaeologist, philanthropist and collector Sergei Grigorievich Stroganov, who multiplied the collection of masterpieces with his numismatic collection and a collection of silver.
In the beginning of the 20th century a unique collection of Stroganovs was enlarged with a collection of paintings by the Count, collector and philanthropist Pavel Sergeyevich Stroganov (the eldest son of Sergei Grigorievich Stroganov).

In the first half of the 20th century, after the October Revolution, some collections were moved to other Russian museums, partially sold at world auctions.
Currently, the Stroganov Palace is a branch of the State Russian Museum.
