My 5 stages of painting in oils that never let me down! The final stage, Stage 5 - Finishing up!
Hello Everybody!
For the past few days I've been sharing one post a day in a series I've chosen to call;
My 5 stages of painting in oils that never let me down!
Today is is the final day wher I will be sharing my last stage, stage 5 - Finishing up!
To read my previous posts here are the links starting with the first;
This is the painting I will be discussing the stages from;
Me photographed with the painting.
The finished painting. ''Summer morning'' oil on panel, sized 100 x 80 cm.
My whole life I've enjoyed painting and drawing. I have experimented with all kinds of different mediums like watercolor, acrylics, gouache, charcoal, pencil and for the past ten years of my life, oils.
This post is written just as much for myself as for anyone who enjoys the world and process of artistic expressions! In this series I will talk about five stages I go through more or less every time I make a painting. The same "recipe" is also applicable in portraiture or still life painting.
So, lets start!
So far I've been talking about getting in the big proportions, massing in the big areas of value, breaking up the big areas yesterday I talked about turning the form and today, last but not least I will give you my way of finishing up a painting!
Stage 5- finishing up!
In stage five its all about finishing up.
That means finally introducing those little details on top of all the previous work to give it that extra punch and finesse! At this oint we are over big modeling work and we got our values locked.
Now its all about introducing highlights and eyelashes sort of speaking.
This is also a good time to maybe add on little dabs of thicker paint in areas that you want to pop more. I did this for example on the white of the waves.
And that's it! Finito!
Here is a porgression line for you as well to see the different stages next to each other;
By the way, sometimes you do realize that you want to make certain changes in the last stages which means re painting a bigger area. This happened to me during this painting. I wanted the values in the mountain to be darker, as well as the sand in the foreground.
It does happen that we change our mind along the way and that is of course ok.
This is just one way out of many to approach a painting and the way that I am the most comfortable with. One of the reasons why I prefer this way of painting is the control it gives me of the process and the paint. It is also a method that is harmonies whit my style of painting, classical realism, though I do think it could be applied in many art forms.
If you have any questions or thoughts about my process or about oil painting give me a shout! Talking about art always brings me joy!
I hope you have enjoyed this little series and that I have inspired some of you to go get your brushes and paint out! ;)
Wish you all a wnderful and creative day!
