STEGODON FLORENSIS painting
The extinct distant cousins of the elephant.
I decided to honor the elegant and lengthy tusks of the stegodon which make it unique. Unfortunately all animals are in danger of extinction.
Stegodons look like Asian elephants (with smaller ears than the african elephant) and the big difference is the long almost straight tusks.
Still part of the elephants and roses series I have.

There's a lot of color involved in layering.
I use yellows, pinks, browns, blues, greens and violets. It's instinctive to use different shades and just blend them together.
The image is soft and gentle.
Here's some daylight photos.
We don't often see extinct animals in artworks for aesthetics (unless they're in encyclopedias), for us not here where I'm from and not usual. This unusual subject reminds us of the beauty of the animal kingdom which we used to have. And now we have the power to raise awareness that many of our animals today could become extinct in the near future if we abuse them and destroy their habitat.
A message of kind gentleness as a strength
