Painting a Nocturnal Assembly ๐จ๐๏ธ Owls, Cat and Fox
I just made 3 paintings! And retouched one artwork!
Here they are:
THE OWL AND CAT
All the paintings I made are watercolor!
I used Kuretake gansai tambi and simbalion watercolor palettes.
THE FOX
It is an old artwork but I enhanced a bit using prisma color colored pencils.
That is also why, for my art contest I thought of birds for the theme. Here's my own participation! ๐
LET'S LOOK AT THE PROCESS!
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
Sketching geometrically rather than employing the use of curved lines.
This helps more with precise angles and shapes.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
With a wide and slanted brush, I paint base color. They're colorful. That's the style I pick.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
I darken the owls body and then layer the eyes till it's dark with many shining lighter colors.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
Here's how you make the stars, just bright yellow spots all around and you darken background.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
You just use light blues for the base.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
I add details darkening some patterns, this helped emphasize the eyes too.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
For darkening the background I used dark violet, dark blue and a dark red violet.
Observe the right side, the colors are just darker and smoother, no technique in particular, just add the pigment with water and spread it with light round brush strokes. Totally random, only, the nearer the owl should be darker by a bit.
Just watch the water spread and mix colors, it's just awesome.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
The colors are lighter and different hues of blue and purple make it more beautiful. Although I did darken mine so the focus would be on the owl and the stars shining.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
The small patterns I start off by red dashes, covering it with dark blue and brown dashes and lastly with white. The edges of the painting I did darken as well.
๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
Then it is finished! ๐๏ธ I even made a poem for it!
I took an apple cut and plate,
Left it on the table laid.
I took a trip upstairs and down
Looked at the table, and around.
I checked my pockets and the floor,
I even looked outside the door.
Crumpled brows, I touch my chin,
Thinking where could it have been?
I hear it! Yes! A little sound
Quietly I turned around.
Near the window I take a peek,
To hear where I last heard SQUEAK!
Outside my head, my eyes a squint,
Nowhere seen, not one hint.
Odd, I felt eyes watching me
And when I turned surprisingly,
It turned its head, a gentle look
Flapped its wings like page of book.
It flew away into the dark.
Since then, I knew I'd be apart.
Goodbye my pet mouse.
The end.

SECOND OWL PAINTING
I wanted to make this a little more emotional, so I picked a cuddling two owls.
process:

๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
A little video! โจ
Okay!!!!
So whats up? Time to talk,
As you can observe, I used the starry method again and this time, I did a lot more details because of the odd shaped tree, the background.
This is actually a dawn scene, the trees on the bottom left corner have sunlight. And the owlies are in bed early inside their tree hole.

Kona the cat
This is a commission art, my friend Randy's cat.
Upclose it is a bit impressionistic as the watercolor strokes are not in detail.
Here's how I made it!
PROCESS:
When sketching, you can edit your reference's brightness to see its shape more if it's saved in your phone.
๐
Base Color is yellow, also, it is the dominant hue of the whole picture so you can't go wrong.
๐
Then we add opposite hues, and by that, I mean cool colors to represent shadows.
๐
Add some more brown, and some light blue highlights.
๐
The face and body have very dark browns. I add that too!
๐
Browns and browns, the flat brush actually creates a fur effect cause the tips get scattered.
๐
Hues of yellow, brown, and green.
๐
It me
๐
It's done!
๐
Let's see!
I honestly find it so tiring to di background but it's one flaw I need to overcome.
So, from now on, backgrounds are compulsory for me.
Not wanting to improve is a serious issue
I can see how my art is very close to the original but not totally. Hopefully I can improve!

YAY!
What about the fox?
I added some orange, red, brown and strengthened the black outlines.
It is more or less better, I hope.
When done:
I hope it looks more red or orange at least.
FINISHED!
I HOPE you liked my nocturnal animal surprise!
I have to paint more owls and foxes and whatever else I can!
I will also paint my sister in oil paint soon! Excited to get all my projects done!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY!

Hi @jacinta.sevilla, I loves all of them.. the four photos. If i have to choose, In sequence, fax, cat, owl and 2 owls. The fox you have painted so naturally, it looks like read fox. The fur and the eye.. i just love it. If have a real fox in front of you and compare it, I bet it not much difference with your drawing.
The cat also looks similar. It seems you very good in draw fur and eyes. Gosh, the art and the real cat looks similar. I wonder if you show to your cat, would he/she thought that you brought her a friend :P
The owl also very nice and colorful. You made me think of christmas hahhaha.. You look like a christmas postcard. especially the 2 owls. They were too cute and harmony. This is how a christmas feel.
How long you have involved in art? It seems you can draw it anytime and finish it in no time. If this is a contest, you already win the prize from by heart.
When you going to show me your next drawing?
Thank you so much for the compliment! Thanks for all the nice words.
Ive been making art since i was a child but formally, just since i was 18.
โฅ๏ธโฅ๏ธโฅ๏ธ
Have a great day!

thank you so much curie
Luv the way you describe your paintings @jacobta.sevilla and the poem just a complete scene for that lovely owl๐
Why it is always look so simple for the artist to draw a line and choose the right colours that would make the paitings look so amazing? Aahh.. my jealousy to you ๐ thanks for sharing and your post is exciting๐
Awww Thank you! yea the poem just came to me since I felt like I made an illustration for something, awww You can definitely draw if you work on it! thanks!
Oh Jacinta, you could have easily created a few posts instead of just one :) They all look so beautiful and deserve a separate post :)
I love that you owl is so colorful. You chose beautiful colors and made them work together perfectly. I like your video where you show us the effect of water on the colors. It's so nice to see them blending. The eyes are mesmerizing. Simply beautiful :) And you even wrote a poem! WOW!
Those two owls resemble a heart to me. They look adorable. I like how you made the part of the painting lighter. It does indeed resemble a dawn. all the colors that you use are full and vibrant.
That fox is perfect. Its fur looks very nice and again those eyes. You are master in painting eyes! The light element make it feel real. And the contrast with the black background fits this painting greatly.
And last but not least: the cat. What did you friend say when you showed her your painting? It looks exactly the same as the reference. I like the pinkish tones that you added.
All of these paintings are stunning! I'm sorry for a long comment but I had to say something about each of your amazing pieces :)
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! I posted them all because I will be making more soon!!!! Haha non stop art.
I appreciate your keen observation and kind compliments. I am so happy to hear you loved my art too.
My friend said it put tears in his eyes, his cat passed away already. But I am glad I was able ro capture such likeness.
Thank you Jancita for these three wonderful watercolor works, every time when I see how you create that helps me understand how you created such beautiful palette of colors, you are really good in painting in Realism style, especially seeing before the portrait you did and the fox is my favorite. But also I love the owls the black background with stars as well as the moment when two of the owls together in their nest, just gives me impression of cold winter day and of course due to coming Christmas festive feeling. Thank you for video tips!
Thanks so much for the comments i m happy to share and help โฅ๏ธโฅ๏ธโฅ๏ธ yes it does seem like Christmas! Hehe thanks
