My illustrations | How to create a seamless pattern. Part 1

in #art8 years ago (edited)

My collection: Summer Forever

Once I became very ill and could not do serious projects. Then I decided to do something simple - to draw a pattern. As it turned out, this task was also not easy. Although the pattern is usually consists of small and simple elements, it is necessary to decide how to arrange and combine elements, also it's necessary to decide whether all the elements will be use or not, need to choose the colors, and so on...  So it's a big job.

My collection was quite big. It consisted of 1 main pattern, 4 secondary (they had fewer elements than in the main) and 8 very simple patterns (for the backgrounds).

How to create a seampless pattern: design a sketch.

There are two ways to draw a sketch to your future pattern:

- Just draw all elements on a paper and then vectorize them in your favorite vector editor (Corel, Adobe Illustrator and so on) and use this editor's tools to create seamless pattern.

or

- Draw a composition on a square sheet of paper (1), cut it with scissors on 4 parts and use glue or duct tape to paste these parts together in another order (2),  draw something in empty spaces (3). Your pattern is practically ready. After that you can vectorize the composition or/and single elements.

There is one more step - to create a moodboard (a collage for inspiration). This step usually can be done before sketches. I often skip this step because I usually know what I want and my projects are not too big. But sometimes it can helps to make a decisions if there are some doubts or if projects are big.

In the next posts, if it's interesting, I plan to tell you about creating Moodboards. And also about how to choose color chemas and how to make patterns in Adobe Illustrator.  Follow me if you don't want to miss new posts! :)
