Spoliarium - The Painting I Respect the Most

in #art8 years ago

If you enter by the main entrance of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Philippines, you'll see a painting so huge, it's probably the largest one around. It's 4 meters wide and 7 meters tall.

The painting's name is:

Spoliarium

Spoliarium

Spoliarium was painted by Juan Luna - the first to win 3 gold medals during an art exhibition in Spain in the late 1800's. This makes him the most famous Filipino painter and for having been recognized well by art critics all around Spain.
Even though it was originally intended to depict a dying gladiator at a Roman setting, Jose P. Rizal (Philippines' National Hero) described it for something much more relevant to what was happening during their time - colonization and its sins such as slavery. He described Spoliarium in this way through his book "Noli Me Tangere" (Translation: Touch Me Not), which is obligatorily being discussed in high schools.

Some of his paintings are in Hotel Luna in Vigan.

I would like to visit there ate @immarojas. There are so many things to look for in Vigan. The colonial structures <3 I remember seeing a picture of McDonalds with a colonial setting.

they're alright ;) we got old spanish structures that are in ruins. if you ever go to vigan, sunset in Sabang in Cabugao is to die for. wag lang makulimlim of course.

Got it :) I love beautiful sunsets. Spanish structures in ruins would be exciting!

Check them out! Although Spanish structures or ruins in between modern buildings aren't that impressive.
