✍️ Sketching: Lady Agnew After Sargent in Blue Chalk
Today i found a couple hours to listen to a podcast and make a new sketch.
Wanting to try something new and different, i decided to draw in blue for a change. I have a couple Conté à Paris Pastel pencils in blue that were sharpened and ready to go, whereas my normal black was broken and kept breaking as i tried to sharpen it (the problem with concrete floors and dropping your pencils) - So blue it was!
The paper is Strathmore 500 Charcoal in cream which compliments the blue pencil nicely compared to a stark white paper.
The portrait is of Lady Agnew who was painted by John Singer Sargent in a famous painting of his in 1892.
Lady Agnew of Lochnaw is an oil on canvas portrait painting of Gertrude Agnew, the wife of Sir Andrew Agnew, 9th Baronet. The painting was commissioned in 1892 and completed the same year by the American portrait artist John Singer Sargent. It measures 127 × 101 cm (50.0 × 39.8 in) and is owned by the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland. - Wikipedia
I just liked the look on her face, Sargent captured not only a likeness but an attitude with the slight raising of the eyebrow and the deep eyes looking through and down at you with a slight smirk on her mouth. Art historians have noted that she was said to of had the flu at the time of her sitting for Sargent - maybe that explains the look?
Some details of the eyes.
THANK YOU for taking time to check out my post. I don't post very often so it's easy to get lost in the feeds without that constant updating, so thanks for finding it and checking it out!
I appreciate your support.
This is so beautifully done @groundcontrol!! 😍
The portrait is of Lady Agnew is one of my favorite paintings and I love this version of her drawn in blue.. Very exquisite! 🙏
Thank you @mayasky - i love how he painted her, how he managed to get the dress so creamy and silky with a few fat brush strokes. Those colours a 100 years later still look fresh.
What to say and not to sound cliche :) But that blue moment, love it @groundcontrol !!!
I’m liking the blue!
Funny thing, the nearest big office supply box store for some reason sells every individual colour of Conté à Paris. These are a high end artist pencil that can be hard to get at the art stores. They even had a buy 5 get the 6th free.
So i bought a few colours i normally don’t use - and from following your work on steemit, i had to get blue!
Thanks @jungwatercolor!
Happy to see more blue one, and looking at this one it's would be a great pleasure :) Love it!!
I'm thinking the next one might have a bit of pink/rose in warm areas, kind of like a 3-coloured chalk drawing but blue instead of black.
🤔
It would be nice, my favorite to mix with blue is purple and sometimes just touch of ochre ..Than it comes alive totally ...So, now we wait for a new one :)
Im a big fan of John Singer Sargent, your blue sketch looks wonderful! Looking forward to see more of your artwork here 😊
Thanks a lot! I hope to get more up, this blue pencil concept has given me a new lease on drawing, i'd like to try a few more and see where it goes.
Such an awesome portrait blue colour is giving it life .
I love it. Great study!
