The Call of the Long Night, A Scholar of the Divine
Hello people of steemit!!! This is the fourth part of my story "The Call of the Long Night". Hope you enjoy it! Have fun!!
Relationships are built in trust, mutual respect, sometimes love, others fear. There are a lot of different concepts that keep the strings between people strong. What about the connections between us and the divine? What is the fundamental concept that keeps us and God, if exists, in touch? Is it faith? Is it fear? Is it love?
These are the questions that keep coming to his mind. He was a private detective for a living. His chosen name was Jason. However, vampires that knew his methods called him “The faithful one”. He was living in a small apartment in Siros, Cyclades, Greece. He was traveling very often as he was a private detective.
He was famous as “The faithful one” in lots of vampire organizations around the globe. He was a Nosferatu. Nosferatu vampires were like monsters in sight. They can communicate with animals, hide in shadows and they are extremely strong. Usually they are informers. He was like an informer, but not quite the thing. He could change his appearance to any face using the shadows of the night. He never shown his real face to anyone. This was a decision that he took to protect his very existence. He didn’t care about his deformation. He was happy for the heart he had and his faith.
He kept his road outside of the war between the Camarilla and the Sabbat. The two major sects in the dark world of the undead. He was working for them sometimes, because the money was good, but never took a side. They respect him too much, to hunt him down in order to choose a side.
He didn’t like the high life. Sometimes he was choosing to smoke some good cigars. But, that was all. He was keeping some money to live in simple ways. The rest of his bank account was going to organizations which help animals and war victims. His life was peaceful. He got himself in tones of cases. He knew his instincts. And his instincts knew him. As he had a really good memory, he could solve puzzles of long games and tricks.
The night of the call, he was at his apartment. Writing his thoughts down in a paper about a difficult case, years ago. He was analyzing how his inner divinity helped him to catch a murderer, preventing more murders and the exposure of “the Masquerade”, the treaty vampires have made to hide their existence from humans. He wrote: “God guided me to him. It was pure communication with him”.
As he wrote down these lines, he heard a voice, a deep voice, coming from the chair behind him: “Good evening, Jason”.
Jason turned his head slowly to see a young fancy haired vampire sitting in the chair. “Should I get my gun out?”, he asked.
I don’t believe there is a need for such a thing”, the visitor said, “I come in peace”, he concluded.
“How you got in here? How much time you’re in here?”, Jason asked.
“I just got in. Well, physically I’m not here. But, we can talk this way”, the visitor said.
“You are a master of psychic projection as it appears. What’s your name?”, Jason said.
“My name is Plato, but as you imagine it doesn’t matter”, said Plato.
“Your name doesn’t ring a bell. Thus, you really are something. What is your reason that you came to me in this way?”, asked Jason.
“The reason I’m here is really complicated to explain in any given language. So, once again, you have to trust your instinct if I really am here for something good or something evil”, Plato said.
“If you want to offer a job, I get paid in cash. I always use another face for business. And I am not a murderer. Investigation is my service. You can send me a letter with the case. No need to waste time talking”, Jason said and got into his writings, turning his back.
“I want you to use your mind, yes. But I’m not here as an employer. I don’t believe in money. I believe in relationships”, Plato said.
“Do you believe in God?”, Jason asked, looking at Plato him with the edge of his eye.
“In some way, yes”, Plato answered.
“There is only one way to believe in God, master of psychic gifts. And the holy Bible has shown the way. I’m not going to waste time with someone as arrogant as you. With someone who believes that found a better way to believe that the one that have been shown”, Jason said without looking at Plato.
“You see, Jason, maybe God has a plan to save this world of ours. And maybe some of us have a part to play. The point is to open up our eyes to the call. To see that our gifts didn’t choose us in random. What does the difference of our beliefs has to make when we are after the same cause. Maybe, we are here to fulfill a promise, from another timeline. That is long forgotten. The choice, after all, is ours”, Plato said with a smile.
“You have your way with words”, said Jason looking at the moon outside his window.
“Once you had a case. The only case you didn’t solve. You were after a female Assamite”, Plato said.
Jason turned and looked at Plato in the eyes. “How do you know about her?”, he asked in complete fear.
“As you said, I’m a master of psychic gifts. Assamites paid you to hunt down Justice. Then something told you to stop. You considered it unfair to find her. Because the only thing she did was to run away. Make her own life and find her way. Wasn’t there a bigger reason that stopped you? Wasn’t your pure instincts? Or, as you say, “God’s touch”?”, Plato smiled at Jason making him feel secure.
Jason looked down the floor. “She wasn’t mend to be caught. She didn’t deserve to be at their hands. I admired her chosen name. Justice… A concept long forgotten in our world”, Jason said with sorrow.
“I’ll be in Athens in a couple of days. We can begin from there. You will manage to find me there. I’ll be waiting for you, with her. Bring your weapons with you”, Plato said and then disappeared from the chair.
Was he what he appears to be? Jason was thinking about Plato. A vampire that got into his house so easy was a problem for him. In the end, he thought, it is all about if he was good or evil. How did he know about the case of Justice? Only some high ranking Assamites knew about it. What was his cause exactly? He wanted to rule or set free? He talked about God as he knew something about God. But he didn’t said that he was a believer. What exactly was his purpose?
Then a feeling came from his bones that he felt when he decided to stop chasing Justice. It was the reason that stopped and closed the case. To his mind, it was a message from God that he should do something. He didn’t know what to do though. He started to pray. Desperate to find an answer to what he should do.
Nothing came. Then he looked at the chair that Plato was sitting. He brought to his mind Plato’s face and smile. He thought that his face was beautiful, peaceful and stable with eyes full of love. He took time to remember his words. “To see that our gifts didn’t choose us in random”, he remembered these words.
He choose to breathe for some moments and closed his eyes without praying or thinking about something. Tonight something divine happened, he thought. “I’ll be there… for justice”, he said to himself out loud.
