Art films #1: Loving Vincent
There still is magic in Cinema!
2 Days ago I watched Loving Vincent in Hackesche Höfe Kino Berlin.
This Vincent van Gogh biopic is the world's first fully painted feature film and has been made using 12 oil paintings a second. In total 125 painters have painted 65.000 oil paintings!
I always admired his paintings as I could feel his heart, joy and sorrow in his work:
"There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people."
Vincent van Gogh
He had one of the briefest careers in art history as he died at 37 in 1890 . It spanned only 10 years and of these the first four were devoted almost exclusively to drawing. Being an autodidact without former education in art, Vincent was an outsider in the times of Impressionnisme.
He had a tough life from childhood to his death, could hardly make a living and depended on the support of his brother Theo van Gogh to pay for his focus on art. Even former friends like Paul Gauguin left him in the end as nobody truly understood him. Most contemporaries considered him to be completely mad and only a few recognized him as the genius of modern art that he was.
But the volume of his output was astonishing: Close to 1700 of his works survived, almost 900 drawing and more than 800 paintings, made in volcanic outbursts of creation that sometimes saw him produce a canvas a day for weeks on end.
Only one of his paintings could be sold during his life-time. Yet, in 1990 Japanese businessman Ryoei Saito bought his Portrait of Dr. Gachet for $82,500,000!
I can highly recommend you watching this marvellous and pure art film if you are interested in living through an expressionistic dream:
