Vincent van Gogh
Self-portrait with hat
it is one of the most famous paintings by Vincent van Gogh. It was made between 1887 and 1888; it is an oil on canvas and is currently preserved at the Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh in Amsterdam. This picture marks a stylistic turning point in the work of Van Gogh. In fact, in 1887 the Dutch painter met Paul Signac, who introduced him to the technique of pointillisme which allows to realize a picture by composing the images with small chromatic units.
The background, however, is composed of darker circular brushstrokes that come into conflict with the color of the hat made up of lighter colors. The intensity of the eyes, from which the other brushstrokes start, give the painting an extraordinary magnetism.
