Artistic space #104 - Beautiful sculptures and paintings by Gil Bruvel
The versatility of some artists is incredible, some can devote themselves only to one artistic discipline, in the case of today I bring you an artist who is dedicated to sculpture and painting and both disciplines handles them very well, let's discover Gil Bruvel. Come with me to know some particularities of his life and work.
Gil Bruvel was born in Sydney, Australia in 1959, since he was very young he had contact with art receiving his first classes at the age of 9 in France, his parents of French origin moved to France when he was only 4 years old, so at an early age decided to be linked to art, his first paintings were landscapes that he made in the places where he lived.
At the age of 12 he discovers oil painting, including most of the tonalities that he used in his palette at that age keeps it today, and as we can see his paintings there are many bright colors, there is a fact that would also mark his life, his father an experienced cabinetmaker teaches him the trade and is dedicated to helping his father in the manufacture of furniture by participating not only in construction, also in design, this implicitly joins him to sculpture.
In 1974 he begins to study in a restoration workshop, where he feels comfortable and learns countless techniques of ancient and modern painters, then he spent some time in St. Remy de Provence but in 1986 he would leave French lands to go to the United States where he has lived since 1990.
Life in the United States allowed him to relive the experience of having worked with his father and, inspired by the craft, he concentrated on making his first bronze sculptures and other innovative materials for the time, such as digital modelling, being one of the forerunners in the use of these technological advantages.
Already in 1974 he enjoyed a worldwide recognition which would lead him to exhibit in various parts of the world such as, Netherlands, Hungary, Japan, Singapore, New York, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, France, Denmark, in many of these places sold works found in museums and private collections.
Perhaps the greatest challenge was the innovation of using digital modeling something very criticized at the time, because it was considered an element outside of art, evidently those who criticized were sculptors who were engaged in doing the job in a traditional way, this led Gil Bruvel to think about how to demonstrate how genuine can be art with technological elements offered by science.
Even today there are people who devalue certain types of artistic techniques for using technological elements, the reality is that, just as there are tools such as the camera that was once mechanical - chemistry and today is digital was also a reason to detract from the form of expression by many artists, cameras or computer programs are still a tool for the artist to express their ideas and arguments.
Many artists have ignored these meaningless critiques and Gil Bruvel is one of those artists who went ahead with their projects to show a new kind of painting and sculpture.
