The Art of Furniture – The Revolutionary Y-Chair

in #art7 years ago

Finding art in all its different forms is something we should all strive to do. Art in furniture is something many of us forget. A look at Hans J. Wegner and his Y-Chair would undoubtedly help us remember.

An Exquisite Expression of Art

As one of the most exquisite expressions of modern art through furniture, Hans J. Wegner’s 1949 creation of the ‘Y-chair’ has certainly stood the test of time. Nicknamed the ‘Y’ chair for its characteristically ‘Y’ shaped back, it embodies the unique quality of style and functionality so rarely evident in other comparable creations. As a product of the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, Wegner’s modernist approach in crafting furniture is evident in most of his works. His reputation as a uniquely gifted artist and one especially responsible for the rise of Danish design in the mid-twentieth century spans over half a century itself.

The Process

The lengthy and meticulous process for creating the ‘Y-chair’, more formally known as the CH24 Wishbone Chair, speaks to the precise nature of Wegner’s work. It’s said that the creation of the wishbone entails some 100 different steps.

What is most special about the wishbone wegner chair is the revolutionary combination of exquisite design but yet simple and practical functionality. The backrest simultaneously curves around to act as a hand rest - an invention which was certainly unique for its time and continues to generate awe to this day. The almost seamless combination of artistry and functionality creates a top quality product, so much so that it has been in constant production for the last fifty years and more – since its creation.

Multi-purpose nature of the Y-Chair

The ‘Y-chair’ is not only a chair handmade for comfort, but is also light and easy to move around. This provides for ease of transportation or even more simple redecorations in a short time frame. It defies the logic associated with ordinary pieces of furniture. As is the case with most conventional pieces of furniture, they are made for specific parts of a house or apartment, whether it be a dining room, living room or bedroom. This is not the case with the wishbone. It fits easily into any part of an abode and blends well with almost any piece of complementary furniture. It can complement the average dining table, be easily placed beside a couch in a living room, or stylishly positioned in the corner of a bedroom.

Made for Royalty

It is said that Wegner’s study into Chinese Emperor’s thrones and the imagery of Danish merchants sitting in them was one of the main creative forces behind the idea for the ‘Y’ Chair. Whatever the case may be, it is certain that wherever this chair ends up, in your kitchen, living room, apartment or house, it’s made fit for royalty.
