How to ship a painting: Custom box
Hello fellow artists and Steemians,
Shipping a painting can be an intimidating, nerve-wracking, and expensive process for artists. Hopefully I can make this task a little less opaque for some of you. I developed a method that that is simple but extremely effective, economical, and hasn't failed me once: Over the past decade, I've never had a painting that was damaged during shipping.
My painting "Prey, Grace" was sold to a collector in Dubai. Due to the extra expenses involved in shipping internationally, it was essential that I keep the box size to an absolute minimum while at the same time providing maximum protection. This necessitated a custom box built to fit the dimensions of the painting perfectly. The painting itself is 12x24 inches, and the frame adds approximately 9 inches to each axis.
Here is my step-by-step process:
I would like to note that foam sheets are totally optional. I only use them sometimes. You can achieve the same level of protection with just cardboard and packing paper.
The next shipping tutorial will show my simpler process with standard box sizes that I use for most of my paintings that ship domestically. The next tutorial is also broken down into greater detail. I hope this was helpful!
