Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

in #art7 years ago (edited)

So, let's talk about life a little bit. Since I don't know anything about yours, we'll talk about mine. I grew up in Nebraska. When people call Nebraska a flyover state, they get the big picture. It's a nice place, truly, but a little bland. I wrote a novel once upon a time about a woman who remembers her childhood in Nebraska in gray tones. Like her, I left home pursuing the colors of a more exciting life.

I traveled a bit on the yellow brick road as all people searching do. I married a jerk and had a few babies. I'm a big believer in continuing education so I went to school and then I went again and again.

Anyway, what I finally learned after 30 years of moving around is color is subjective and gray is more complex than people think.

It took a sick mom to bring me home but, here I am, 30 years later, screaming at Husker football games, dealing with day to day of Alzheimer's and shaking my head at the crazy world around me more and more.

Oh and I write, hopefully, more books someday, this silly little blog and enough work to pay the bills all while enjoying the color in art, instead.

Turns out the yellow brick road isn't all that.
