Name That Mollusk + Under the Sea with Jesus + Coral Reef Quilts
"Four years ago today" is a fun Facebook feature.
I had quite forgotten this bizarre item from my mother-in-law's basement. Nobody else would claim it while clearing the house after she died so I knew I had to give it a home. I posted a question on Facebook about it and got an interesting response from Nebraska author John Janovy Jr:
People glue together marine shells into all kinds of designs and objects,
so I'd be very surprised if someone didn't think to put Jesus into the mix.
However, at least one of those species is from beaches where I'm sure
there's a lot of debauchery going on, especially during spring break.
Ah, but the scholar Janovy couldn't stop with that. I mentioned that the middle seashell has a hole in it that seems to have no end. My husband says as a child, he'd stare into that hole, fascinated. Janovy ignored that and went for the jugular:

Okay, your invertebrate zoology quiz: name the genera of mollusks and corals. (Actually the snails are marine and fairly easy to identify using a field guide, and you can get somewhere in the ballpark with a Google image search using "marine gastropod shells".) The corals are a different matter, and somewhat more difficult to put a scientific name on. And there is one big bivalve, probably a pecten or scallop of some kind behind the cross.
Now I know
why I just had to have that bedspread I saw online. I gave away the one we had to someone who loves it, which totally justified me indulging in a $100 coral reef bedspread.
Normally I am frugal to a fault
and will not update anything unless it's beyond repair. But this bedspread appeared to include a horn coral, my favorite fossil. I heard it calling me:
My weird obsession with the bedspread has to be a direct result of subliminal indoctrination via Jesus Under the Sea.
Horn Coral?
Yes? No?
I'm waiting to hear from Janovy. He started it!
Well, Jesus-Under-the-Sea started it, but Janovy got me hung up on knowing the names of these sea creatures.
Do Not Get Me Started
on Endangered Coral Reefs today. It's too disturbing. We can't let them die!
