Sketching in Paris: Watercolour Painting and Drawing

in #art7 years ago

Hi Steemers

Today I would like share with you two study drawings from my trip to Paris, France late last year. I found that drawing was a great way to get to know the intricacies of the architecture and develop a sense of understanding and appreciation for the amazing vernacular style one finds in the city of light. But it also helped me get better at perspective drawing and proportion which was a particular focus throughout my sketching trip in Europe.

This watercolour shows a view looking along the river Seine down to Notre Dame Cathedral from the left bank. This was a really fun sketch as my brother and I enjoyed some wonderful French wine and cheese for lunch before embarking on the measuring out the proportions of the bridge and buildings by using a pencil and fingers to get a feel for the correct measurements. Unfortunately after lunch it begun to rain so I quickly filled in some of the areas with washes of watercolour, before packing up my gear and moving to some cover under a bridge.

This drawing shows Notre Dame from the Left bank side of the river, as my brother and I sheltered from the rain. This study allowed me to contemplate the beauty of the great Gothic building and especially to considered the details on the spire as well as the challenge of getting the perspective right, or close to right.
