BEASTLY TALES

A DARK KNIGHT

There rode Sir Percy Vere,
Commander of Cinq Ports, looking so queer.
Bedecked with a shining suit of armour,
A warrior true, but without any drama.
Sir Percy was most persistent, doggedly so.
Must be victor in every battle that he’d go.
No-one could suggest, regarding Sir Percy Vere,
That he held back, didn’t persevere!

Sir Percy rode by, armour glinting in the sun,
Surveying his estates, of a size that would stun.
A most wealthy man, master of all the surveyed.
The peasants looked on, looking somewhat dismayed.
Under the Feudal System, rent must be paid.
If war was approaching they looked extra nervous,
For the peasants might also be enlisted for military service!
Paying the rent when one’s mighty poor is enough!
But losing one’s life on a stupid errand is more than just tough!

Archaeologist Sebastian Spooner Digalot,
Later in history discovered a plot,
A dastardly plot, to be sure,
Something that lacked finesse and allure,
A Commander of the Cinq Ports,
Had been, archaeology speaking, carrying out rorts.
Not in any cause of his land’s defence,
That is to say, having fun at the expense,
Of his peasantry, rustic countrymen of his land.
Doffing their forelocks, in a manner least grand.

And so, it happened to Sir Percy Vere,
One day, after feasting, he awoke feeling queer.
What happened? His faithful retainer called his nursey dear.
